I'm old. I've been doing security for a very long time. Started back in the 1990s. Here's what I have learned over the last 30 years... Half (or more) of security alerts/warnings are false positives. Whether it's th

The squat (aka primal or Asian squat) would be better than sitting or standing to poo. There is a lot of research on this... If you do sit, it helps to bring your knees up closer to your chest. You can buy devices to help do this... The Squ

I would change this: "Do what works, not what your database professor said you ought to do." To this: "Unless you work for Google or FaceBook, just do what works, not what your database professor said you ought to do."

Most corporate meetings are this way too. It's not about discussing how best to get things done. It's about performing in front of others. Human nature I guess.

"On the ground" = WoW sensors. WoW sensors have been around a long time (see link). And, humans probably should not have any say about that. If humans could override WoW, then the landing gear could be deployed or retracted when i

Security is like football. If you repeatedly practice the boring basics (blocking, tackling, running, etc.) you will win. Patch, backup, use keys for remote access (rather than passwords) and you will win the security game. It's pretty

Right, the difference is those daemons are written by other teams/people who have various experience/knowledge/security requirements for their software. The daemons in OpenBSD base are all written and maintained by the same t

It's like Ga Tech (Georgia Tech). The domain names are different (gatech.edu versus vt.edu) as are the program rankings... VT should be honored to be pronounced in a similar way as they are ranked way lower than Ga Tech ;) I have degre

Or just call, email or txt. Signal is only as secure as the device it runs on. Cell Phones are not secure. They are blackboxes and probably track you and may have built-in backdoors (only to be used to catch 'real' criminals), etc

If I told you 50 years ago, "Hey, we're going to build a worldwide surveillance network and make the people we are tracking pay for it", you would not have believed me. But that is what happened. Cell phones.

Be kind to people and help others if you can. Spend time with them. I did pay my grand mother back for course books and things she paid for (the Pell Grant only went so far), but I also tried to visit her when I could. I think the visits me

Yes, There are only so many re-runs of Walker Texas Ranger. I've seen them all dozens of times on OTA TV ;) I agree with you about gaming, Twitch and YouTube as being replacements for mindless/relaxing viewing.

Some US universities do this remotely via proctoring software. They require pencil and paper to be used with a laptop that has a camera. Some do mirror scans, room scans, hand scans, etc. The Georgia Tech OMS CS program used to do this for

Nice write-up. Thanks for sharing. Some may not remember BitKeeper being used to maintain the Linux kernel source code and how a discrepancy was found (22 years ago) between that repo and the CVS repo. This kind of led to git and signed com

I worry about this too. Diversity is a good thing. And when we do email, DNS, Web, calendars, chat, meetings, storage, etc. all on the same platform, how will we operate/communicate when it fails? Heterogeneous computing environments p
