While I totally agree that hooks reduce code size a lot, and have used them to great effect, the feeling that hooks are weird has not faded. I know exactly what they do, and usually help co-workers with weird edge cases, but I still have a

I usually look at this in the form of “layers”. If you have a lot of duplicated logic, its a lot nicer to abstract those concerns into a “layer” of functions / classes. Whats important is to not have leaky abstractions though. The mome

The biggest “aha” moment for me was when I started working with graphql. The tooling would statically analyze your queries, and produce types for exactly what you were requesting. Then you would just have a bunch of raw queries laying aroun

Funny enough, most competent hiring managers I’ve had the chance to speak to on the matter, agreed that if you’ve worked in the service sector, especially by necessity, you end up a much better hire _because_ you are usually more humble and

Granted I've worked only for smallish companies (<2000 people) but most places don't have specific policies _not_ to do it, especially if you do your due diligence security wise, and don't show the company in bad light. If

Thanks for the reference, I personally didn’t do the connection. But wanted to mention that its so cool that offices no longer look like that, at least where I live. It used to be similar, even worse as a post soviet country. But it’s now s

That’s why I’m such a huge proponent of company sponsored open source. You wrap your infra/core functionality into an os project, and keep the businessy things in the private repo. You get to work on it during your work hours. It inevi

There are so many things the author got right throughout the Expanse books - physics, politics, character progression, character impact. He just added a pinch of sci fi to make things interesting and different, but in a good way. It starts

While this is great if you know exactly what you want to achieve, it does “lock you in” those constraints on a more fundamental level. More times than I can count I’ve seen business requirements change to require those “unrepresentable” sta

In Bulgaria (EU) they often ask you to provide proof that you are currently not being prosecuted, but apart from that, the only time I’ve been asked to get a criminal record was when applying for a citizenship. And having one is not somethi

The venerable “Firefly” series explored this a bit way back in 2002. The idea was that since china is _the_ superpower even the lowliest scum would know a curse word or two in chinese. Was quite an interesting concept back then.

While this is indeed what is currently happening in the world, I think it would be relatively “easy” to convince the poorer countries. They can be pressured in so many ways: “If you want to look like us you have to do it”(cultural). “If you

This got me thinking... people _will_ start putting infra into space sooner or later, just for the better latency. Imagine the new availability zones in aws/gcp/azure :) Could definitely lead to more investment into space, more mo

One of the most “high” moments I’ve ever felt in a game was the successful lunch of my first orbital craft. That first orbit I felt so excited I had to stop the game and run around the house. I tried to explain it to my SO but she couldn’t

I for one would welcome a new alternative to sql. It might not be _this_ alternative, but why not try. SQL is very hard to learn properly, with all of its gotchas and inconsistencies. There are running jokes for noobs truncating their table

Isn’t there a knob to control the angle of the projectors? So that if you have heavy cargo at the back you can adjust the angle? In the country I live in you’ll get honked to oblivion if you mess with that and blind the other drivers.

I've been following https://github.com/adelsz/pgtyped for awhile. It should give you TS types from sql files (and even sql template literals) directly. Though I haven't used it in prod. Might be worth a look.
