Don't start worrying about the "purity" and "this was never intended". You don't specify a processor instruction set in the real world without expecting people to write higher level languages for it, so why expect people to write at such a

What is 'smart' though? I think the mantra is basically saying "hire people who fill in the gaps". A good leader is someone who facilitates identifying and filling in the gaps, which has little to do with "smarter".

It's unnecessary because apps continue to work with little to no modification without semis, it's paranoid because all of the reasons people come up with for why semicolons are important (lint tools? minifiers? bugs?), are all non-problems

The point is to reduce noise. JavaScript already has a lot of cruft going on with all its anonymous functions, parens and curlies… anything to reduce the signal to noise ratio is a step in the right direction.

Unlikely the default lint options are going to suit all teams anyway. JSLint/JSHint can, and should be configured for your team's style.

If you're commenting on the dangers on no semis I would put money on the fact you haven't given it a real try. Perhaps you tried it, had an issue once, and immediately reverted. Its like critiquing a book you haven't read.

Dropped semicolons about 6 months ago and haven't had a problem even once. Once you get into the habit, it requires zero extra effort. You just know when to put them in, same way you just know when to use parens vs curlies. Coding with semi

I can tell I'm going to get tired of "Merlot" very quickly. Looks nice 'till 1000 sites use the same heavy theme.

Basically, it should just wrap the HTML generated from markdown (if readme is markdown) in some theme.

Also it should be pointed out that we aren't made of fruit. We preserve meat in salts, does that mean salt is toxic to us as well?

Perhaps not you, or many HN readers, but for many the answers to all of those are "yes". For example, my non-tech girlfriend has had an ipad for 6 months now and the only time I've ever seen her use the computer was for word processing and
