Not to mention wanting something to break if the secure implementation somehow were separated from the code using it (versus silently reverting to PRNG).

yup, I can see my idea being the start to a sci-fi movie. Even what you describe though is still just building more arms in an arms race. Natural selection itself needs mutations as fuel. Another crack-pot thought - figure out how to decrea

I wonder if it would be possible to use natural selection and human behavior to our advantage? imagine a compound that causes bacteria to adapt in a way that makes us easier to control them. like putting fluoride in our water we'd distribut

If more web services supported CORS, pure client side apps would be way easier to do and less kludgy than via proxy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-origin_resource_sharing

In general starting from zero you'll find some customers somehow, even just randomly and then you have to be awesome for them and build from there. The level of churn and flux at the low end of hosting is actually pretty high. You could put

I've never heard of any of those companies. I'd be careful going with someone that you don't know a single other person who uses. Social proof matters for service businesses like hosting, because point in time performance is such a weak ind

Thanks that's nice to hear. Not in the cards for me. Technically still under non-compete, but even if that weren't the case at this point I am connected to so many other hosting providers that I'd rather just support them in doing the right

We did talk about something basically like what you describe for both slicehost and RAX, but it really doesn't solve the problem. Take that EC2 definition itself (which is frozen in time in 2007, surprise surprise), how many 2007 Opterons a

I cofounded slicehost and spent a lot of time at Rackspace thinking about this exact problem relative to Rackspace Cloud Servers. The real issue is hardware skew. We like to buy/sell and build on cloud as if it is a pure utility where eve

When there is no free alternative to what you are doing, they'll still buy (in my case that was hosting). Otherwise, your best bet for getting developers to buy things is to try and sell them stuff that would be boring for them to build. Mo

Ouch. Net revenue margins at 2%. There's more top line margin in farming. Makes me wonder if there isn't an antitrust case here somewhere. Feels highly predatory by music license holders.

Everything from 2 people working on an idea who haven't yet quit their day job all the way up to say ~1 million in revenue or ~1 million in funding. That upper end is a bit of an outlier, but it happens enough that it's not entirely rare. T

I wouldn't say so. -> http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4421764 If anything I think both YC and TS just reflect the wider market with some extra noise and ideally better outcomes.

I run TechStars Cloud. Roughly complete for me. Key thing when you look at this data is to remember timing. I've only run 1 program thus far and it only completed 3 months ago. Wouldn't expect to see much in the way of exits after 3 months

This is technically true at the moment but not for long. Once the crowd funding portion of the JOBS act is accepted by the SEC, anyone can invest up to 10% of their annual income in startups.

Google incurred that cost early, but that tipping point of being 'worth it' to engineer for uptime came pretty late in the game for twitter. Interestingly AWS appears to be in the camp where it's not heavily focused on uptime either. A pret
