Religious faith hasn’t declined. It’s just re-branded.

Yes, programs are Turing machines that use memory. I’m a little insulted. No method of containment is good enough for something like that. But we agree that sandboxing as a basis to claim that AGI won’t be a danger is totally unsound.

The entire sandbox thing is foolish. Obviously it won’t be sandboxed anyway because of what you’ve pointed out. But any sandbox we design won’t be good enough. GTP is not supposed to exist according to computer science and machine learning

The layman and the AI expert have both written off the possibility of creating AGI for the entirety of this latest AI spring. In the past decade I have basically never encountered anyone who thought that AGI was going to happen in our lifet

This is wild . Absolutely wild. And I think it says a lot about what we might find on Mars. The only thing cooler than reviving an ancient microorganism is reviving an ancient Martian life form.

Actually, assemble multiple water-filled cylinders in earth orbit and then put those in staggered cycle orbits. Power requirements are low so all you’d need is a regular engine with a large fuel tank. Once those are in cycle orbit you now h

Multiple launches. Assemble and fuel a big spinning water bottle in orbit. Maybe tether maybe not. Spin up and establish cycle orbit. Done. Basic physics and orbital mechanics. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_cycle

You should learn basic physics before you presume to know it... It’s not a question of power. You could could get it spinning quickly or slowly with high or low power respectively but the question you are trying to ask it how much energy is

The problem isn’t the smart people who look at these problems. It’s the collective behavior of the masses to have amnesia about basic physics.

Imagine if they tried to cram a bunch of people in a literal metal tube with no windows and send them to the bottom of the ocean for months as a time. How could anyone be stupid enough to think that would work?

Make the transit ship spin. Surround the habitable parts with water and other materials. It’s so simple but nobody seems to be aware that these are solved problems.
