How much of that profit is passed on to shareholders vs benefitting land owners directly? There’s also the matter of not being able to live in those shares, having to still pay rent, still pay massively inflated property taxes yourself…

Also, the biggest winners from prop 13 are businesses like Disney: https://www.curbed.com/2020/10/prop-15-california-property-t... Meanwhile, anyone who didn’t buy a house or property for a business 20+ years ago

It’s hard to have a ton of sympathy for people paying very little tax on their 7-figure property. Sell it and move anywhere else…but the real pro move is to just rent it out and live somewhere else. We have neighbors in our Silicon Valley

Prop 13 also has the great benefit of keeping anyone new out of the neighborhood, as they’ll be paying potentially an order of magnitude higher tax on the same property. Meanwhile, folks living on the edge of poverty already can stay in the

This is the biggest reason that I won’t get a Framework today. Give me a Ryzen with 8+ cores, 32GB DDR5, hopefully two m.2 slots, a full-size HDMI and USB-A port(s), 99wh battery because of TSA security theater, dedicated graphics, and some

Browsers are de-facto windows managers in the unfortunate world we've created where everything is a webapp with 5% of the perf that it'd have as a native app.

They could have bundled it into the app to save hella bandwidth, or done something similar to Samsung's awful generator that comes on when you select an input without a signal.

If, by painful, you mean “the need to plug in that old HDD with 100k MP3s”, keep up ratio on private trackers, and end up finding tons of amazing music again, all completely free to do anything I want with, then sure :) Squeezebox Server wa

I feel that the “support / updates” subscription model allows a constant stream of income for devs while still allowing one to “own” a given version. There are things like Bitwig (DAW) that sell the initial product for $300ish and that

Not a big enough market for that in the consumer space, so you’ll find what you’re after in a big beige box with a network port made for “SOHO” or mid-size enterprises.

I’ve had good luck with the Epson LABELWORKS LW-PX400 label printer and they’re projectors, but yeah for printing now we just pay the $0.05c/page at ups or FedEx or wherever.

This is the way. However, it’s a bit sad that all these decades later, quality color printing at home is still such a mess because of a few profiteering companies.

I predict that this will be the Tumblr story all over again. Maybe Apple will buy “Twitter” after their value is less than 1B in a year or something.

Some day we'll have the technology to report speed traps via CarPlay. I'm guessing that they got a lot of pressure to nerf this feature from law enforcement, as crowdsourcing realtime info on speed traps kinda ruins it for the cop

AMD has them beat on battery life too, Intel just keeps pushing up TDP to try to get perf back even though their node size is bigger and their fab tech is behind. It looks good on paper to call this a "14-core laptop" too but real

Look up “field monitor” on Amazon, there are some for under $100 (usually 7” 720p native res panels). A lot of them have 1/4” or 3/8” stud mounts for mounting as well, some can accept common batteries like LP-E6 for portable usage
