So as I was reading the article I clicked on a bunch of the papers, queuing them up for a later purchase decision. But they're all open! Yay Microsoft! So much for my long weekend...

Aw, but triangles and circles are such a huge part of everyday life, one should understand them well for that reason alone. From as practical as hammering wood together to as abstract as noticing the sine curves of the seasons. And without

Yeah, it seemed to me that the ability of his organization to rapidly process paperwork was more important to his bottom line than the bad-assery of stealing aircraft. Most of the time they just fill out the paperwork and go get the plane.

Lots of good comments here, many of them all true at the same time. A marriage is a such a big commitment (10 times bigger if there are kids), that if there is something in your life more important than your marriage, it (probably) won't la

A) You're thinking of the Foreign Legion. Go look it up. A few years of military service and you're in. B) When you get married you're making a very serious promise to share everything and build a life together. The state provided default

Well okay, not nil. But the methane eventually oxidizes back to CO2, half life 7 years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane . Contrast with fossil fuels, which take a looooong time to get (permanently) back into the ground.

Ah! I think you get it too. Although the greenest way would be to just let the grass grow and have a hayfield outside the building.

The carbon emitted by the lawnmower came out of the ground, where it had been for millions of years. Net effect, more carbon in the atmosphere. The carbon in the goat methane comes from the grass, which took that carbon out of the air a fe

OK, call me an old fart then. I did AP Calculus in '92, and ODE was certainly NOT on the list. I shouldn't be surprised I guess. After all, once upon a time Special Relativity was graduate level material. One more sign that the singularit

Well, yes, putting the sarcasm below aside, I agree that this is Really Cool Stuff. Reminds me of the bit in Anathem when Fraa Erasmas teaches Barb about Hilbert Spaces because, dammit, he was ready, and why make somebody go through the pai

There is a whole class of financial planners who only work for rich people. They typically want you to have 500k net worth before they'll talk to you. They provide better advice for much less money that the retail mutual fund pushers at b
