I did much the same thing when the kids were about the same age. I would also put a kitchen timer _in the room_ set to 3:10. So at 3 minutes I got the reminder to stop what I'm doing and go to the room. Then at 3:10 their timer goes

Back in the 80's few machines had hard drives, and often only one floppy. So if you put your disk in the drive and fired up the machine then bang, you were infected. Also, lots of machines with hard drives were configured to boot from

Hmmm, it seems to me that if an executive is reaching across the organization for that kind of thing, that's a bad sign. It means the executive doesn't trust their leadership team (in the case of a skip-level) or their peer organ

For sure! My least favourite type of bug is the converse though. "How is this possibly working?" When you're pulling on a thread and come across a function that looks completely broken and yet somehow is not.

This talk, "Debugging with the Scientific Method" changed how I debug problems. I try to watch it once every year or two. tl;dr, when debugging people naturally form a hypothesis about what is going wrong and then set about gathe

Somewhere I read a quote from some cranky business analyst complaining about how the low prices, quality products and high wages impact profits. "It's better to be a Costco customer or Costco employee than it is to be a Costco sha

Take heart! Plenty of very smart and capable people bounce off this sort of thing. I think it's a matter of temperament; some folks are wired for strict typing and struggle to see the value of dynamic typing, other folks vice versa.

I'm confused about the breezy way in which they distribute partitions and consumers. Since the producer computes the partition key and the consumer chooses which partitions to bind, how does the central kafka team enforce balance? One

Be that as it may, I agree with the spirit of the grand-parent comment, which is that if you stick to straightforward Pub/Sub Kafka works great.
