Drivers license or a hunting license are acceptable but student ID is not acceptable to vote does not make sense. Further, it is a superficially reasonable solution to a non-problem. Fwiw: "time and time again, voter photo ID laws are

Totally. Combine with a nice sweater, a headset mic, a giant screen behind them, an audience and boom! Insta credibility. Looking like it is a TED talk is just as good as being a TED talk - and of course then all true! Deep expertise.. (may

Did that work out well at all? Any silver lining? My first thought is: "branches" & "tags" - wow... Would branches/tags have just been easier to work with? Were they working with multiple services in a multi-rep

Big brick is a metaphor. Not compressed, but solid. Essentially enough plant matter that you can't walk through it, plant matter that is "solid" from ground to the tree branches. For example, on this site: http://

Oil production is at all time highs (AFAIL). Further, drilling locally for oil does not directly reduce local prices. It is still shipped abroad to the highest bidder. That is ignoring the refinement issues that not all oil is equal and nee

Any other notable events that happened in the 30s that could have driven deflation? Could tariffs be linked to that event? (To be less coy, the great depression occurred in the 1930s. Counter tariffs led to less exports, which further hurt

While tempting to link the two, you really can't. Post-hoc rationalization fallacy. I've come to appreciate that all of Yahoo finance/stock news is true bullshit. Markov process, random fund manager deciding to move money, t

Interesting. Was the smoke less toxic? With lower populations, the smoke impacted less population? Is a large part of this the fact that fire supressiondid did not occur on industrial scale? How comparable is the situation? I've heard

Most private owners are tree farms, right? Those burn like crazy. I've seen very few well managed tree farms, they do exist. Anecdotally, after observing several thousand linear miles of west coast forest, just a handful were well mana

Yes! Necessary for a number of trees to reproduce. Morelle mushrooms are another example, their spores are fire activated. Look fo them in burn areas the following spring. West coast trees evolved to drop their lower branches. They naturall

Can you provide more evidence that logging suppressed the modern super fires? It strikes me as implausible and unrelated: - fire fighting costs is now exponentially more AFAIK - that revenue from the 90s might not have gone back to forests

Not enforcing federal law is different from violating federal law. Marijuana legalization is more gray. ICE for sure is active even in so called sanctuary cities.

To your last paragraph - it's not just dead wood that is the issue - right? In CA, there is a lot of shrubbery that turns brown and grasses. Second, (west coast) forests that have not burned in a while look like a big brick of plant ma

Your point of stopping fire suppression has something to it. Though, 3 issues I see with complete disengagement: (1) there are whole towns that would burn down, avoidably so if some fires were not suppressed (2) modern fires are rangers and

Surprised bright morning late not mentioned. Camping usually resets circadian rhythm in as little as 3 days. Bright sun in the morning gets a person up with the birds, no lights at night puts a person to sleep. Artificially, similar can be

Good points. I would go further and say it is the integral of emissions over time that we would be most concerned with. From that perspective, over the last 200 years - it is problem children, and rising problem childs.

Is a big problem for passenger trains in the US, freight has priority. Creates these long stops. Worse, if a passenger train is late, then suddenly it has to wait for a large unexpected and unplanned number of freight trains.
