Yea, the typical programming 101 method to initialize a random number generator is to seed it with the current unixtime, so if both of these machines were using the same random number generator (the clocks didn't even have to be in-sync wit

I agree. Apple fanboys are like Porsche aficionados. They buy it because it's sexy and elitist, therefore, the consumer is also sexy and elite by association. It doesn't mean that Apple's products are better than any other, just more sty

Stick with LAMP - PHP, Mysql, Linux - you've got the tools. Don't fall for the Ruby/Erlang/Lisp croud. Don't struggle with the language. Get it done and worry about the details, not the language.

That's approximately 200TB of data. I suggest sharding the data across multiple machines because a single SAN doing BDB lookups of a single file of that size is still going to be a tad slow. Most large databases nowadays are divided by sh

Sell stuff. Get people to sell their stuff on your site and take a small bite of the sale price. Don't rely on ads and seo - too competitive. Then, go out and pound the pavement and get people to sign up to sell stuff. Would be good if

Make a realistic (some what conservative) estimate and triple it. Same rule goes for cost estimates. Doubling is never enough. Better to under-promise and over-deliver than the other way around.

That's actually a great idea. We're working on a way to have users request a certain category of ads on their ads that they post on their site, but having them post their own products is a great idea.
