Didn't pg once write: It is greatly to America's advantage that it is a congenial atmosphere for the right sort of unruliness—that it is a home not just for the smart, but for smart-alecks. And hackers are invariably smart-alecks. If we ha

I read SICP when I was 14; this was a couple of years after I came across some pg/Lisp stuff. It would be absurd if MIT CS students remain ignorant of 6.001 given their institute's really hardcore hacker culture. Hence, I fail to see what t

I could never get myself to use that; it's possibly because I refuse to remap one control key to the caps lock. I usually navigate by searching for some substring of the link.

I'm really sorry for not making myself clear: I meant that I would start using Chrome if it had such a feature. And yeah, Firemacs is awesome. As a matter of fact, it does allow for navigation using some vi bindings by default. Even though

I really do like HN, I think for the most part it has been beneficial to the community. But for the love of god, I wish half of the comments on Coding Horror submissions here would stop being the same old ad hominem attacks on Jeff's writin

I'm aware that there was a discussion about the other extreme on HN a month ago -- http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=482257 -- but I need to vent off a little. Forgive me if I go off on a tangent. I've recently graduated from a high sch

Most programmers have the habit of using asymmetric bounds i.e. lower bound included, upper bound excluded.

"reminded me of Feynmans comparison of Princeton versus CalTech.." Pardon me for being pedantic, but I believe he was comparing MIT and Princeton.

I come from India, a country that does really well in the IPhO and the IChO. Most finalists coming from here treat these olympiads as training for entrance examinations. It is no surprise that Indians do not show this stellar a performance

Allow me to gloat a little: Just a couple of days ago, I gave a ten minute presentation on computational complexity as part of a high school English assignment (sic) to my classmates who mostly had hardly any programming experience at all.
