There was an episode of Freakonomics Radio not too long ago that discussed risk in different types of societies. A study did show that a matriarchal society had men who were more risk averse, and women who were less risk averse which implie

I'm using SVN for source control. And I'm a little confused on the first part, because .NET 4.5 is not supported in Visual Studio 2010.

I think the improvements we'd get in Entity Framework performance, testing, and analysis would be well worth it.

I'm still using VS 2010 at work. Can't seem to make a compelling case to upgrade for the cost, and it's just getting more frustrating. VS 2013 is looking like a really great product, especially in comparison to VS 2010.

Couldn't agree more. My father-in-law works for a small business that launched a static site earlier this year. They pay $80/month for "maintenance" on that static site. I just launched a static site last night. Total co

I think good enough is an excellent lesson for most people, especially me. Fear of not having something polished enough prevents me from getting things launched on a regular basis.

I can't see anyone saying anything else. "An engine broke and you are stuck on the moon and will die horribly. What do you do?" Seems your options are to either accept your fate and die, or try to live.

Why is that? I prefer JavaScript to CoffeeScript, and I imagine that more people have used JS than have even tried CS.

So you don't have to leave your desk ever, for any reason. That's quite the stretch. The option to have lunch brought to your desk is great when you're in the middle of something and don't want to get out of the zone.

I got my first dev job with no job experience, no degree, and no real portfolio to speak of. Of course, I had been coding on my own for over a decade, was well read, and came with a wealth of other experience that was being looked for and w

I guess it depends on the stack. I'm also a .NET full stack dev, but my stack includes Windows servers instead of Linux servers. It's been 5 or 6 years since I've done Linux sysadmin work, but I still knew a bunch of these.

I know of exactly one person that I've worked with and would take as a business-side co-founder in a heartbeat. And he won't leave his current job. I can definitely agree with your comment.

I would love to work in an office that has caves like that as opposed to the open office I'm in now. I'm constantly distracted both audibly and visually -- the constant visual distractions being the big kicker. I definitely think

There were a few key parts to this (and lots more that I'm missing). 1] OS felt dated. Failure to come closer to what customers wanted on a timely basis. 2] Poor app developer experience. 3] A lot of different hardware specs against wh

It's not a candidate's problem that they can't code? I think the candidate has a level of responsibility here. Really they shouldn't be applying for a development position if they can't code.

Have you tried an ergonomic keyboard? I tend to be a bit of a floaty typist as well, but a couple years ago I used a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard for a year. To my surprise, I found that I got used to it pretty quickly.
