Personally, I don't value software parents much. I think they are a giant waste of money. You spend $20K on lawyers, to get nothing more than the right to spend more money on lawyers in the future. That $20K could be better invested elsewhe

The jist of the post is that "maybe is superior to null", because maybe does null lifting. That argument, however, is a bit shallow. The first question to ask is, why not just make null behave like Maybe in the first place? That would be th

You should be weary of using Lex for unicode, because the tables can get large. As far as Bison goes, I guess that's up to you. My preference is against it, mainly because I don't think it buys you much (if the grammar is small, the code fo

I'm going to start a flame war here... I guess. The thing about bottom up parser generators, is that they really aren't all that useful. There's a dirty little secret in compiler development: most "real world" compilers use hand written top

I can only speak from my own experience, so I don't know if this holds for everybody, but I think the guy misses a lot of important points. When I was 13 I discovered programming, using QBASIC, on my old 286. This was in 1993, before the Y2

If you are ever going to commit a crime, don't use a computer. If you do, you will get it caught. It's that simple. If someone has a warrant to seize your computer, and you encrypt it's contents, you can be compelled to remove the encryptio

I have a few pieces of advice: Your feelings are just normal youthful listlessness. It will pass. You could try getting REALLY DRUNK, but it won't really help. In a year or two, things will be a lot better. Modeling the stock market is REAL

Personally, I find arguments against using debuggers to be absurd. More importantly, I think they tend to promote ponitification over science. Using a debugger is, effectively, taking a scientific approach to understanding a software system

Some of the points he makes are not really accurate. For example, he states: "as machines get 4 cores (processors) and then 8 and then 16, apps written for Snow Leopard and beyond will continue to be faster and faster, with no changes, whil

Seattle is not really Midwestern. I would say, if anything, it's more European. I'd say it's a nice place to live. My wife and I are both from WI and we like it here.

I'd be happy to talk to you about my project. I'm based out of Seattle, but with the magic of the internet, I don't think that would be a big problem. Would you be available to talk on Skype sometime?

How often do you commit to your git repository? Once a day? Once an hour? You are still vulnerable to any mistakes you make in between checkins. The laws of the universe state that the one time you forget to commit is the one time you will
