What does Nginx offer that HAProxy doesn't? We've been using HAProxy 1.4 for over a year now, up to 1500 req/s on a virtual machine. It's the most reliable piece of all of our infrastructure. Hardest part has been tuning the Linux instanc

Note that this is a new logo for the UC system, not for Cal. I didn't read through this whole blog post (the UCLA SB Nation blog is full of angry people too) but there seems to be some confusion about that.

If requests hits the 90% and urllib2 the 10%, then requests should be the standard library and urllib2 a module. I think his point is more to point out good modules that most people should use, and should become common knowledge of what peo

We recently evaluated DNS options for our ~800 domains we host DNS for and decided to go with DNSMadeEasy. We're not switched over yet but the deciding factor for me was they're an anycast network and can offer a lot of cool regional respon

Not to rain on your parade, but to anyone looking to try this I just wasted 30 minutes getting setup and trying it to find out that Godaddy, for example, returns next to no results through this service so it's no solution to WHOIS woes.

I always understood "may be having issues accessing Twitter" to simply mean Twitter is made up of large distributed services that rarely all go down. Instead service A in location C down might be down which means you might not be able to us

I think you're giving "programmers" too much credit or "project managers" not enough. I'm the product guy at a small-ish company and my main dev-side pet projects are deployment/CI and development workflow, and I've implemented 95% of the s

To be fair, titles should give some idea of what's in an essay or post. If you use a linkbait headline is it that unreasonable to address the more ridiculous point made by the headline?

What strikes me is how similar these guidelines are to what we practiced for my fraternity's recruitment in its best days.

I dunno, we separate out static file vs. needs-to-go-to-Tomcat requests at our HAProxy so I'm actually interested in what simply performs best serving static files. I can't imagine we're the only ones to have this need.

Thanks for the invite as well. Been using Asana about a week now so here's some comparisons: * I like that less is happening on hove compared to Asana—I find the over-reliance on hovers and background changes (cf. new Twitter) very distract

Major things I wish for are: bulk grouped undo, improved Safari-esque search where all items highlight, non-blocking project search, jump to class/function definition that doesn't stink, improved project layout a la Espresso & Chocolat,

The hidden premise in arguments similar to the one the author seems to be getting at is that transporation infrastructure should be financially self-sustaining. We don't expect that our roads pay for themselves, so why should our trains?

Shocking though that it doesn't appear to support any codecs for HTML5 video, rendering it useless on that front: http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/gadgets/Motorola/Xoom/ht... Having recently worked on implementing a video solution that

That's false. Read this: http://lists.whatwg.org/htdig.cgi/whatwg-whatwg.org/2009-Jun... MS didn't commmit to anything, Mozilla essentially blocked H.264 from becoming specified codec too. All had reasonably sound reasons to hold their re

As others have said, it's not "their own video codec." Also, it's not clear that WebM is not patent-encumbered in some way. Secondly, Apple "picked" H.264 as a format nearly four years ago when they built the original iPhone with hardware d
