I get a salary that would be laughable by most standards, partly because I'm a young autodidact with a BFA, and partly because I live in a part of the US with very little web dev opportunity. I'm stuck here while my SO finishes grad school.

Thanks for that term, hadn't heard it before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifestyle_business That's exactly what it is, and I want out.

What do you do if you find yourself having to wear all these hats, while the founder forwards emails and reads FastCompany all day? I don't see a hat for that.

I don't get the point. The only time a blank tab opens is when you're typing in a URL or search phrase, at which point your eyes are on the chrome anyway. If the Cognitive Shield has any perceptible load time, it's not worth it. Granted, at

I've been working on it daily since October. Compared to osCommerce, Zen Cart and Volusion, Magento is slow and extremely flexible, mostly due to its EAV architecture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity-attribute-value_model . You can ben

Thanks for posting this. I haven't seen much about Magento on HN, though it's got a ton of potential for ecommerce startups. Unfortunately its development has been pretty rocky so far. I added this post to their bug tracker. I think someone

I'm utterly disappointed by the lack of the best input device I've ever touched: The Trackman Wheel. The amount of time, desk space, and wrist strain it's saved me over the years is unfathomable. Mice of any kind feel like toasters now.

I think it's funny that after working on a dual head, people tend to forget about window management and maximize everything, then get upset when faced with one screen. I much prefer one (giant) screen with tiled windows. It just feels more

You're looking at it too literally. A grid is meant to be a basic visual system -- a framework in itself really -- that brings order to 2D design and usually gets obscured by graphics. All of these are based on exacting grids: http://www.w

2000 was about the time I discovered Linux. Looking back, it's jarring how much the desktop distros tried to emulate the latest version of Windows. I think the current distros are guilty of the same mistake. Rather than trying to advance th

On the contrary, I think the effectiveness of the design depends on its clutter. The clutter promotes exploration, as long as you're not expecting an informational tool.

Amen. If the goal of programming is to liberate humanity from tedium, what's with this kind of elitism? Many of us live happy lives as programmers with zero formal training but relentless curiosity; having never cracked SICP or taken an ele

The background fade looks like hell at ~1600px wide and doesn't even matte to the correct color on the right. Guess color correction took a backseat to ad planning.

Practically speaking, I wonder how long custom tags will remain as flexible as they appear in the spec. It won't take long for search engines to decide their preferred tags, how they're weighted and how they relate. Then our tag schema will

Summary: PHP is cluttered, people like to bitch about it but use it anyway, sometimes frameworks are good. The 'yet' is merely a weak thread through the vague, obvious noise. I want my 10 minutes back.
