Correct, the user agent in no way indicates it's a bot. Just a standard IE6 UA.

Oh, ok. I interpreted your comment to mean that no major service could pull real time analytics beacuse it's just too hard. Sure we're a lot smaller than Google but 200,000 is a pretty big number if I do say so myself.

getclicky.com monitors over 200,000 sites and it's real time. Sure it's challenging to provide that level of service but without challenge life is dull.

Yeah so he reduced the number of database rows from 3M to 1.4M. But you shouldn't be using a normal database for this type of query anyways - it's SLOW, because you're doing a range search. Maxmind also offers a binary database that is extr

It does say that in the paragraph right above the table. For sure, adding another column would make it more obvious, but I feel like that would be overwhelming. I have a problem with the number of columns we have already :)

Does it really cut off ~ URLs? No one has ever mentioned that to me. I'll look into it. Of course, we normally log full referrers, even dynamic ones, so you can see the actual sites linking to you. It's not such a big issue more recently, b

We allow sites up to 300K daily. The default plans just go up to 100K, but you can create a custom plan also.

Yes, Clicky is more visitor centric, including tracking custom data per visitor, but plenty of good overview data as well. Plus the whole thing is real time, including goals and campaign tracking. Plus a very powerful API. Check out the Spy

I have this exact same problem. I don't forward traffic through SSH but I run a service that has almost 30 servers. Sometimes I have connections open to 10+ of them, sometimes (shudder) all of them. When my connection dies I want to throw m

"My prediction is, in a few months, you'll be thanking Google for the much better search results." I don't really think this is going to change anything. How is this going to affect SEO? I doubt any of them use referrers logs - waste of tim

When you click a link from a google SERP, it goes through a redirect script. They could easily be using that to feed Google Analytics.

That doesn't affect the referrer though. The referrer is still the link where the click came fromo, which woulld still be e.g. google.com/search?q=whatever The redirect script has been tehre for as long as I remember. It's probably tied in

Yes. Google damn well knows that no major web browser sends the #hashmark part of the URL in the referrer. They damn well know this breaks every single analytics package out there.

Yeah but you can bet your ass Google knows it's breaking every browser out there. If they wanted to make a change this big, they should have contacted the 4 major browser vendors at least 1 year in advance to give them the opportunity to im

In theory I guess it sounds good, but I don't see it working at all. This would create 18 seperate groups of passengers, and unless they're already in line in the right order, there's no way this would be faster. When they call your zone to

I'd be interested in reading this if it was easier to read. It's like one of those blogs where they're like "TOP 100 THINGIES!!!" and it's 100 pages, each page with 1 thingy. Thanks, but no thanks.

This story is a perfect example of why this site should have downvotes. A) It's old B) Therefore it's not news C) Even if it was new, it's so amazingly un-exciting that it's not news anyways.

A lot of ad networks suck big time. AdSense is decent if your site is content oriented, e.g. articles about specific thigns or whatever. If you run a service like I do however (getclicky.com) then these types of ad networks don't work at al

Great write up, agree 100%. My startup (getclicky.com) was seeking around $100K about a year ago. We talked to a lot of people but could only find anyone who was interested in a very small (<10K) or very large (>1M) investment. That
