If you've ever driven or biked in San Francisco (or I'm assuming any other marginally bike-friendly city) you'll quickly understand that for bicyclists, stop signs are yields and red lights are stop signs. You're just going to have to get u

I was so enthused by Vico that I wrote a fairly wordy review about it in August. Added some corrections and notes recently. Feel free to add/contribute/fork. I think it's a great editor, with just a few minor shortcomings which I hope will

This is a nice overview. I have been a happy user of Vico for the past two months after years of putting up with Textmate's lame undo. I recommend it if you are comfortable with vi/vim/macvim but want a more Maclike interface plus Textmate

I could have predicted this thread would turn into a PTSD support group for GoDaddy survivors. I have my horrible stories too (all from freelancing days); suffice to say I learned a couple of things: * Cheap hosting almost never is.

People working on teams where each occupies some vertical niche -- designer, developer, etc. -- should have a solid understanding of the territory their own niche abuts. I don't think visual web designers should necessarily be able to fully

I have been enjoying using Vico for the past month or so, a pretty Mac face on vi, with extras like support for Textmate Bundles. The mac-ness of the interface helped me through some vi adjustment rough spots, and now I'm extremely comforta

Most people don't care. That was my impression anyway after doing about four years of IT and lab support for student government and activity groups at a large UC in the '90s. The ones who did were bound for engineering or science, or were s

The hardest part of learning to program for me (thinking back many many years to THINK C) was learning the environment and what all the terms and messages meant. I think basic programming is actually conceptually easy. I remember being frus

This is very nice. Some more informative messages would be helpful. Some errors are genuine errors while others are simply an issue of not typing in precisely what the lesson wants you to type in.

I am so much more refreshed and clear-headed after a 20 minute mid-afternoon nap than after drinking any amount of caffeine. However nap or no, just having a regular schedule and 8 hours of sleep a night makes either remedy less necessary.

The notion that BART areas are not public and subject to the First Amendment ("right to peaceably assemble...") is absurd on its face and in detail. Of course it's public space. That's where the public is! And, BART is financed by public mo

Before there were lots of easy-to-use self-publishing apps, it made sense to install your own on a $5/month host. Most people nowadays use Wordpress, the service, not Wordpress the PHP package.

I submit that PHP's popularity has much more to do with mod_php and its ubiquity across cheap web hosts than any intrinsic merits as a language. As someone who made a good living for many years by building stuff with PHP... I couldn't get a
