Usually 1 job means 1 person-year worth of work. So 6.5 years of a tech worker would usually mean 6.5 jobs. The jobs also tend to include things like construction workers, etc. So if you hire 500 people to build the place over 2 years tha

Well your original post made no mention of this. I know plenty of people with kids that have to travel for work. And they make it work. FYI, retaliation over parental leave is a thing too. I have a friend who took 2 months parental leave.

This is one benefit of having a unique name. My good friend, "Robert Miller" is out of luck. Me, well, yeah. Only one person with my name in the United States, possibly the world.

I'm always paranoid about this stuff. There's lots of fancy tech words in that article. Before you use ANY piece of backup tech you do not 100.0000000000% understand, back up your data with tech you COMPLETELY and UTTERLY underst

> why you'd need 13,000 people to do that? From my understanding, creating 13,000 jobs means you will create 13,000 person-years worth of jobs. If you employ 1,000 people for 13 years you have satisfied the definition.

My pessimistic view is that nothing will fix SF or California in the near future because California's housing mess has been a slow moving continual disaster since the late 60s-early 70s. The problem predates prop 13, which was enacted

I think at least part of the argument is that if the union spends time and money improving general working conditions, you're benefiting regardless of whether or not you're part of the union.

Its not so bad if you make good use of your hotkeys. E.g. on Ubuntu the "windows key" + number will switch to that program in your dock. I have it setup like this: win+1 = IDE, win+2 = terminal, win+3 = test browser, win+4 = d

I graduated from a no-name college shortly after the dotcom bubble burst and it was still easy for me to find a job paying $60k/year, which was plenty to live off as a single person in the SF bay area at the time.

I have my own personal examples directory for each piece of tech I use. And where possible, each starts with just main() and zero libraries. I do have examples hooking it up to other tech, because that's important to know too sometime
