"cut your losses, close down the company, and move on" only works if you have no investors, or if you end up on the verge of bankruptcy. While there are investors around, they'll be looking for pieces of the IP portfolio that they can carve

I knew a guy at Microsoft who got sick of his dev job and moved to Las Vegas to be a police officer. From what I hear, he's having a ton of fun, but I'm not sure it's less stressful. :)

I would even bet that disqus.com didn't just go to namecheap.com and say "hi, I'd like to pay 9.95 on disqus.com, please". Most pronounceable 6-letter domains are already being squatted on. In my experience, it really can't hurt to approach

There are lots of folks out there who have managed to do exactly that. They're called consultants, gurus, etc. It's not as simple as just learning stuff, teaching it, and getting paid, but if you love doing those things it's certainly a way

I installed Chrome Frame to make Wave work in IE8, and it ended up breaking Google Reader. Hardly a panacea, indeed.
