They said caching wouldn't work, but they could be wrong. You can't change the Cache-Control header to public for HN responses, because the same URL can appear different to different users. There may be some ways around this, including givi

(disclosure: I work for Mozilla) Is any JavaScript engine faster with GCC than with MSVC? Most of the difference I've observed has come down to compiler quality on 32-bit Intel systems. I don't think Linux vs Windows has much to do with Jav

(disclosure: I work for Mozilla) I've never found the argument you're making very compelling. It's "open" in the same way that golf course with a $500 greens fee is open. What it really constitutes is a way for existing market players to co

This article reminded me of RescueTime. I think RescueTime might be OK, but not for me. I tried clicking the unsubscribe link in the emails, which did indeed unsubscribe me instantly. However I did not get to opt out of paying them another

wow, I couldn't believe it either. A scare quote headline with a full suicide note republished. I did notice no one at the Huffington Post would attach their name to this trash.

Verizon is a Dow Jones Industrial Average component, like the AXP and KFT stocks the author mentions. Its P/E ratio is well over 200. http://www.google.com/finance?q=VZ I don't know very much about stocks, but this leads me to believe tha

yeah, I've read this blog post before, and this bit has always stunk to me. The pattern might be 0xDADADADA, 0xCAFEBABE, or 0xDEADBEEF. But it seems perfectly reasonable to ask what one might use this for. In fact, you'll find 0xDEADBEEF in

(I work on Firefox) Beta 9 is not available. You are linking to nightly builds that will eventually become Beta 9. That SunSpider score vs Chrome is nigh impossible in the default configuration. Maybe you have Firebug turned on? I'd expect

Generating and caching can be intertwined. For example, HN seems to generate an inline script at the top of every page. The script doesn't change nearly as often as the posts do, so that script is sent redundantly at the top of every page.

This seems like what to expect at this stage. Something to dismiss as a toy because you can't create anything serious on it... yet. There has to be a reason Google is bundling Flash on this thing, and I bet the reason is not that Google thi

For code, the best way is a URL to the bug tracker or commit log which shows all of your contributions. Use bit.ly if need be. A surprising number of people will list projects they've barely contributed to, using languages they barely know.
