@samlambert what exactly makes it hard? Isn't it as simple as setting synchronous_commit=remote_apply or does planetscale have a custom strategy or are there other operational issues? Just asking since I find it both the planetscale&#x

I wonder why other providers don't use metal ssd sync replication technique that planetscale uses? Most of them just default to EBS. My interest in it peaked when I heard about NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe/TCP) and SPDK from Xata[1] an

I agree, I have a restaurant POS system and I think self-hosting would easily kill the product velocity, and if we screw up bad, even the company. However, I do get the point about cost-premium and more importantly vendor-risk that's p

Backups don't alleviate durability concerns. Read replicas(async) neither. I think only way it could work was if I implemented sync replication like planetscale, but that arduous.

But ephemeral and non-redundant. Am I correct in that using local disk on any VPS has durability concerns?

Yes natural languages are by nature ambiguous. Sometimes it's better to write specification in code rather than in a natural language(Jetbrains MPS for example).

Isn't it simple? Create events from past relational data and add them to the log?

Not speaking about their case, but I think some cases a "versioned mutable data store" with a event log that lists updates/inserts makes more sense than an "immutable event log" one like kafka. Consider the update_o

Right, but then your downstream consumers have to be global and can't be partitioned based on account_id or some other partition key?

I mean a bank account sending money to another bank account. That would be 2 events(one withdraw and one deposit)? But if I'm downstream consumer consuming the event log and computing the state from that, if for some reasons I receives

That's not true on the face of it. BYD overtook VW in chinese market only recently in 2024[1]. In fact what seem to enable chinese auto companies to become world leader was the fact that they were exposed to global competition from VW&
