Yeah, the Linux kernel has ~12m lines of code. <1m are the core, the rest are drivers.

We can continue to experiment while also going slowly. Evolution happens over many millions of years, giving organisms a chance to adapt and find a new niche to occupy. Full-steam-ahead is a terrible way to approach "progress".

There will always be people who won't think. The specific problem the OP is noticing, is "promising juniors" who then fizzle out and become these people who won't think. I think this is an interesting category to look

The capital gains tax could be 90%+ on any gains over $10m (and 99% over $100m), so they can still sell out, but it would cap liquid wealth at $100m dollars. However, they would still have a billion dollars of ownership, and the societal p

An interesting fact I learned: the original definition of "Passion" is the intimate suffering of Christ on the cross. It brings new meaning to corporations wanting Passion from their employees.

Only a hundred years? At current energy usage rates, even though energy usage increases year-over-year, every year, without fail? And of a fundamentally irreplaceable element that is only forged in supernovae? How dare you.

Not OP, but yes, "defund" meaning to reverse the excessive budgetary increases of the past 5-10 years, which increased militarization of police, alongside increasing qualified immunity precedent. Some people took "Defund The

A sword can kill one person at a time. A gun can kill 10 people at a time. A bomb can kill a hundred people. A nuclear bomb can kill thousands. You can certainly commit mass slaughter with less technology. But then you need either a) mo

Yes but technology exacerbated them. The great wars of the 20th century killed 10s of millions of people, 10x more per year than any other conflict.

Being able to? Perhaps. Actually doing more good with their money? I have yet to see it writ large. (10 out of thousands is a pathetic proportion to use as evidence for this.)

When do we get to call Trump a dictator? When he ignores court rulings? When he floods the zone with illegal executive orders? Do we have to wait until he calls himself a Dictator and insists everyone else do the same?

I disagree with the toplevel statement. In high-school science terms, productivity is like accuracy whereas efficiency is like precision. You can be very "productive" at a high-level without being efficient. Similarly you can b

It seems that every version of MS-DOS from v2.0 onward was actually developed by Compaq. I had no idea. > That relationship had been established in late 1982. Back then, Gates had contacted Canion and asked, with some concern, if Compaq

It's not static, global wealth been growing at 3.8% per year for the past 25 years, which is historically quite a high rate. 10 more years at that rate would be 50% growth, or $750T. The numbers you're talking about aren't f

One unified global government sounds like a nice ideal, until you realize that a few rogue billionaires can seize control of it through legal means. This happens on a national scale already, of course, but at least there are other nations.

The counter-proposal to IPv6's 128-bits was 64-bits. This is 16 quintillion devices, which seems fine. Doubling the address space is a good strategy when you need more. Quadrupling it is over-engineering.

The design of IPv6 is for computers, not for humans. How do you even say an IPv6 address aloud? You need to be able to communicate "192 dot 168 dot 50 dot 1" over a voice medium.
