Meh. The word "Target" doesn't really carry any signal about what that company actually does. Ask yourself, in Target's infancy, did the name hurt or help them? I'd guess it had very little to do with their eventual

I just started a new job and have hopped into the first codebase I'll need to work with that I didn't write from scratch myself. I've just been pining for a way to browse through this code as easily as documents in a web brow

I just wanted to thank you for writing about the doldrums, and about continuing slowly through them anyway. THAT piece of advice seems so universally applicable, and I don't personally don't run across it so much in places like HN

The point of the article isn't where to lay blame for the security breach. It's to point out the hypocrisy of people who scream "Invasion of privacy" in every online conversation about the NSA, but somehow still feel jus

I'm not sure if it's a good Hungarian text, but the one I got the most out of was called "Learn Hungarian"[1]. It's out of print but you may be able to find a used copy on Amazon. To be fair, by the time I got my ha

I learned Hungarian as a Mormon missionary, and by far this agglutination (I'd never seen that term before) is my favorite part of the language. It's like being given a set of word legos and told "go nuts!" And it alway

I just went through a process like this as a candidate. I was emailed a problem description and told, "Please send us the code that solves this problem. Do so at your leisure, and please don't spend more than x hours on it."

A minimum viable feature, nice. Interesting way to test out whether a new feature is needed or not. Then you pave the cow paths. I love this idea.

You can read about tptacek's company's process here: http://matasano.com/careers/ . It really does seem like a good way to learn whether a candidate will be able to perform the job.

The gym misspelled your name and your bank told them off? I'd love for some amount of the infamous Japanese formality to become more commonplace here...

I have no experience, but here's my reasoning: At the moment you don't have a lot of traffic, so you likely don't have a lot of users, and you don't really know if you have something they'll pay for. You don'

The difference, if anyone's still playing along, is what action the device takes. An IDS (detection system) is a monitoring and alerting device; traffic still gets through. An IPS (prevention system) drops the flagged traffic.

Instead of posting a comment like this, it's generally better just to upvote the comment you're agreeing with. The mods are trying to optimize the signal:noise, and there's not much signal in a two-character comment.

The downvotes are unwarranted, but my guess is: it seems like you're claiming that no one in your cohort watches sports based on your anectdata. A claim which is likely out of touch with reality. I upvoted to hopefully even out your

This mindset baffles me. You're entitled to Game of Thrones, and are justified in pirating it because you don't agree with the terms under which it's made available?
