Is there any data on what the big companies (Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, ...) are starting software engineers at? Anecdotally, friends starting at Google out of school are getting base salary offers closer to the senior numb

Darn, no benchmark against Ipopt, which in my experience still gives the best black-box performance on large, sparse quadratic problems. In my experience the commercial solvers (Gurobi, Mosek) are actually quite slow.

Delaware is considered a southern state by the Census? Weird! It seems to have more in common with the New Jersey and New York than, say, South Carolina. Is it just an arbitrary Mason Dixon thing?

> conservatism in the middle and south of the state You don't even have to go to the middle or south of the state. Look at the current gnashing of teeth over marijuana dispensaries in San Francisco.

I've seen all the O(n^2) worst case algorithms that reduce to O(n) on nearly sorted lists used, for example, in sweep and prune algorithms in computational geometry.

I've seen OpenMP-based, non-BLAS implementations beat out MKL, on Intel hardware nonetheless. We emailed the MKL folks and they just shrugged. :) Don't presume that MKL is the lower limit on performance.

Without density you can't have these in a walkable neighborhood. It takes X number of customers to support a grocery store (or a bodega, or a restaurant, etc). If you want one nearby, you need more people in a smaller geographic area.
