I'm not sure what sort of context can explain away this real-life Randian superman. (and it's interesting that you mention Rand and crime and the Fountainhead, given that Howard Roark blew up Courtlandt Homes with dynamite) This i

That's part of it, yeah, lots of courses out there but they tend to be things like survey courses, etc. Some of this is that the video content turns out to be the equivalent of only a 1 or 2 credit course.

I've taken several coursera courses and maybe the good ones are hiding in there somewhere but I'm really unimpressed by the ones I've seen.

For the record, that was Ayn Rand talking about (one of?) her favorite serial killers, who became the basis for a character in an unfinished novel, about whom she wrote: "[he] is born with a wonderful, free, light consciousness -- [res

He is too impatient to toil slowly through the years for the things he wants. Too uncompromising to succeed in the way of the popular men who know how to get along with those in power. Too intolerant to “get along” with anybody. Too passion

People in SV who have some success want it to be a meritocracy so they can feel that they succeeded on their own internal merit.

On the other hand, if you let yourself update your prior with the actual data, you'll see that frequentist statistics has had the better part of a century worth of successes.

If this is the Moyes algorithm which does graph clustering I think you have to ask yourself a couple of things: 1. can a parallel algorithm that optimizes each node individually get the same result as a serial algorithm that optimizes them

I don't want to run an O(n^3) algorithm on even a medium sized graph if I can help it. (and in the new order of 'big data', even O(nlogn) algorithms can be too expensive to solve).

In that case, how much of your 18000x speedup is due to the GPU and how much of it is due to re-implementing the algorithm in a compiled language? Python->C/C++/etc is a 100x-1000x speedup right off the bat. That's not a f

Twenty years ago low flow toilets were more evidence of the heavy-handed iron fist of the Orwellian state into our every day lives.

" My co-founder, Chuck Moyes, discovered a clustering algorithm that identified friend groups in a given social graph. However, the algorithm took an hour to run parallelized across 6 computers. Then Chuck had the clever idea of coding

Also the problem with rental cars is you have to drive down 101 which can be a nightmare especially if you don't know the road, in a cab you can at least sit in back and decompress/prep.
