I so the same. Except I'm still spending too much time dicking off in front of the computer. I guess partly due to embarrassment about not working "full time". Your comment inspired me to get out and do something instead. Tha

I'm not sure I understand the scale from exuberant consumerism to rodent play thing. I think your middle ground is still just a singular point at the consumerism extreme. One could argue that "old gross junk" is just another

Thank you for bringing this up. This is an important distinction. I'm totally with you until the sentence that includes "find their true love". This sounds like there is a very particular kind of love (the true kind) and perh

That's odd. I found almost every point on that list immediately actionable. - Use the work "but" less often (I can practice this today with my partner). - Start looking for a new job if you work for someone you can't see

It's not a fallacy, it's a paradox. One that indicates that our theories of quantum fluctuations in an infinite universe are incomplete. This podcast episode has a good discussion on the subject: https://universetoday.f

I agree, but I don't think this is limited to science. I think a great deal of everything is in fact trash. This is why we need education and good faith discussion.

And this is why we need error bars on all plots. Looking at these plots there is no way to know whether people guessed uniformly or whether the self assessment is clustered around the mean.

This is so great! I feel like most ML ("AI") products are just linear regressions with fancy packaging, but this actually looks super cool! I want to set this up in my summer house ASAP. Thanks for sharing.

I switched to DEVONthink Pro when Evernote switched to Electron and started removing features (e.g. related notes). I capture a lot of images of documents and need the OCR capabilities and search. They also have a fairly extensive AppleScr

This. The importance of learning calculus and model building (physics) is all about learning to reason, making predictions and quantify domain validity. It's not about calculating derivatives or proving continuity. I think people take

Not sure if you're joking, but no, that doesn't make any sense. Asphyxia is a lack of oxygen, not an excess amount of CO2. Even slight increases in CO2 will make you feel extremely uncomfortable, long before you actually run out o

This might be a language thing. In Denmark "elite" is the official label assigned to those who compete at the highest level in any given sport. So say a runners club may have an "elite" team or "elite" runners.

This is not true at all. The constitutional powers of the monarchs in Scandinavian countries do not at all reflect reality. The monarchs have no power to influence politics or elections outside of public or international relations.

We might never know with complete certainty, but then what can we know? Exploring the limits of the theories we pose is the only way to gain knowledge. The physical world is after all fairly predictable. Even if we will never know anything

Indeed we might never be able to measure the global normalization of the likelihood function of life, but that doesn't mean we can't investigate it's local properties. In fact, I think we can learn a lot from doing just that.
