Because the arbitrary scoring makes it clear that it was just corruption, designed for the answers to be given to some people ahead of time, so that you could hire them instead of other people, backed by (artificial) data. People don't

Yeah the way the points are arbitrary makes it very clear that the intention is for only people who know the answers ahead of time to pass. It was an underhanded way to do favoritism (by giving out the answers to the associations whose back

Yeah exactly. This administration is even more corrupt and favoritist. That doesn't mean this hiring scandal is not bad, it is, it's just that you can't solve corruption with even more corruption.

That's true. But it's essentially impossible to have that many comments if "there is no debate". Comment threads where everyone just says "I agree with you!" over and over again just don't happen.

I mean, it's that digital "places" are not nearly as good as physical places, is the sense a lot of us have. I've seen some people who have good descriptions or arguments for why they think this is true. But for me, it&#

A better comment would assume that this person has indeed researched feudalism and would criticize the analogy based on that assumption.

Yes but if it turns out that you really are building an application, but you didn't think you were up front, it is likely that you started to add "just a little bit of js here and there", because after all each little thing y

Maybe. Personally I haven't come across this phenomenon. But I haven't worked on this type of system in a very long time, so it's probably different perspective from different experience.

I'm not suggesting building a complex system from scratch. I'm suggesting building systems using tools designed to support the kind of system you're building. Do you think your quote is true in all cases? Or are you implying

For an imagined future. If you're building something with specifications, then what are we even talking about? You know what you need to build so just build that. But this thread is about what to do when you don't know. "Star

You never have a definitive answer. It's always probabilistic. You make the decision that you think has the highest odds of success at every point in time.

There is significant path dependency in either direction. A sibling comment to yours described it very well. There really isn't a good substitute for understanding early on whether you're going to be making a website or an applica

It's funny that you use self driving cars as a negative example. We have a perfect natural experiment to look at to compare the slower research-driven approach (Waymo) to the "normal company" short term profit driven approach

These aren't contradictory ideas. Governments should fund more research and should also make it free.

I'm pretty sympathetic to both sides of this. I don't really know the history well enough to say whether you're right that breaking up AT&T "helped lead to the modern internet". But even stipulating that it did,

Wait, is the suggestion here just about crawling and storing the data? That's a very different thing than "Google's search index"... And yeah, I would agree that it is undifferentiated.

Yep, this article is a good example of one way that c++ is bad, but it's not really a great example of rust being particularly good; many other languages support this well. I'm very glad Rust is one of those languages though!

The way I see this is that it's just another skill differentiator that you can take advantage of if you can get it right. That is, if it's true that abstraction and architecture are useful for a given product, then people who know
