IMHO, the point is not that the site isn't flashy, but that it doesn't explain why would you want off-site and crypted backups in the first time. The site I would expect for a backup tool is one which scares the visitors to the hell, full o

My definition for ipv4 adresses exhaustion is: IANA and RIR's have no more unallocated blocks, so everything is left to the free market. If its consequences will be catastrophic or imperceptible is something I can't imagine. I would love to

It's worse than that. There is a standard way of assesing programmers productivity and is the worst it could be: kLOC's.

I just would have used "b" to go backwards by words instead of characters. It's not optimal, but much more natural.

The regular expression example makes no sense for me. A regexp is a very specialized way of express what a pattern must match, opossed to a java code that express how to perform the matching. You don't regexp's compact syntax. That's fi

Wasn't it obvious? I mean, this is applicable for almost any language, let it be C++, ASP, TCL or whatever isn't considered trendy anymore but it's proven and stable, and isn't completely unsuited for the task(COBOL, 4GL, RPG...) Takes at t

I don't think nobody is saying that is migration is easy or risk free. Some of your complaints I think are more related to how has been done the transition in a particular facility than generally applicable. About culture, it's true that mo

I work in IT for my country's National Health System. I made the switch only six months ago so my domain knowledge is still very limited. Anyway, I have already seen how automation may greatly improve doctors and nurses efficiency. For exam

Personally I don't get ORM's. May be it's because the only I have had to deal with was Hibernate, and seemed to me as an innecesary layer of complexity and bloat, and objects and relations sometimes doesn't map nicely. If you want to persis

While I know very little about MySQL, I was surprised by that example too. How a relational join could be slower than that couple of query's? Moreover, at first glance, why didn't do exactly the same with a subselect(MySQL supports them now

Thank you for your eye-widening comment. It's surprising how we swallow "well known facts" as this (everybody pretends to know that we import energy from french nuclears), without any research. The comment you answer wasn't mine, but it cou

The new SkyWalker is a men's Barbie. It's not tougher, it's just more sexually attractive to the oppossite sex, and a physical model for boys. That's how I see it, at least.

AFAIK PL/SQL is not "Oracle's SQL". It's executed by a different engine and you get context switches when you execute SQL Code (don't know about T-SQL). But Oracle's SQL is by itself Turing complete since the introduction of the "Model" cla

Is this a response to bing? If you go after my market, I'll go after yours. It's not only the Chrome OS thing. Google Apps out of beta could mean that Google is serious about competing in the groupware segment.

That's nothing. When you want extra processor resources on an IBM iSeries, you only need to enter some code (after paying IBM big €€), and vóilá, your server will use some extra cores that were always there. I have heard Sun does the same,

I agree. I prefer to attach a 5-line comment to 10 lines of code to writing 15 lines of code. If the reader knows the idiom great, if not, he can grasp it without going into the details. Not everybody agrees, though.

The less the programmer says, the more flexibility the compiler has to speed things up. I seriously doubt it. The more the compiler knows, the more it can optimize things. What it's "daily" in this example? It could be anything. The only

From my ignorance, it seems a very smart move from Oracle. It makes a lot of sense for them since Sun has lot of things they lack of: Server hardware, the Java stack, an operating system, their own processor line... They just became an IBM

What's wrong with PLT-Scheme? It's well-documented, has a decent amount of libs and its syntax its much cleaner than CL's one, but can't find any reference about anyone using it in production code(other than Arc).

Python uses native threads which can be scheduled by the OS to multiple cores. It's just that can't run the interpreter at the same time (C-coded extensions can, and most of them release the lock). Yeah, not a big difference really.

The most interesting about the results IMHO is JRuby's performance. It's now faster than CRuby1.8, and, for what I have read, solves also the scalability problems associated to it(threads, GC, etc...). And there's a lot of room for improvem
