I've done this inadvertently. Ironically, my intent was precisely to avoid discouraging a beginner, but this article makes me realise I was, at best, sending mixed messages. I was helping somebody who was taking a Java course withou

I think immutable infrastructure is probably the way forward, but it's not yet easy enough to be the default for lazy people. tiny step forward for orgs who are deploying code to boxes that they never take down That's exactly wh

This could be a big deal in terms of raising the bar for deployment practices. Right now "nobody ever got fired for" setting up deployment via rsync and some ad-hoc shell scripts. That works for a single host, although it's

It's rather condescending to assume the only reason somebody might dislike Javascript is because they didn't understand it.

I get that this timeline is designed to promote the author's own parsing algorithm, and doesn't claim to be exhaustive, but I'd be curious to know how PEGs / packrat parsers and Hutton/Meijer's work on monadic

Gabriel, I've noticed your posts often attract this criticism - "you can do X in any language, it's not unique to Haskell". The funny thing is I don't think you ever claim that X is unique to Haskell. IMHO this (e

Having met some of the Hacker School faculty (though not the OP) and discussed their social rules, I don't believe this is a shaming ritual, in intent or practice. I think it's more like a code review. "You need to check for

Slightly off-topic, but the OP's closing thoughts make great advice to anyone commenting on / reacting to some new technology: I ask that you think hard about sweet.js. Give it 5 minutes. Maybe give it a couple of hours. Play aro

This is an excellent landing page for a technical book. I haven't seen this style before, but the code snippet and details for each chapter gave me a good idea not just of the book's content, but of its emphasis and assumptions.

Thanks! I lazily only clicked through to Amazon and didn't see it there. I don't know what's involved in getting the Kindle version into Amazon's store, but it might be worth it, as their buying experience is very slick

Any plans for a Kindle or other ebook version? This looks like a fun presentation of an interesting topic, but I'd love to read it electronically on a laptop so I can try out the examples.

I found this (a page or so in) to be a good summary of "why should I care": the proliferation of ÐAOs in user-friendly applications has the potential to allow the public to claim back control over their data and over their privac

I don't know the OP's examples, but I think he is saying something subtly different: that he took (his own) low-end crappy OO code and converted it to high-end elegant OO code, using the insight gained from how he would have w

I'm not sure if you're objecting to the topics they're planning to train for, or the perceived formality of the training, but I don't think either needs to hurt the culture if done well. Communication is incredibly impor

Assuming you mean wordpass doesn't exist: try "cabal update" first. If you mean cabal doesn't exist, you'll need to install the Haskell Platform first. There may be a package for your distro (or Homebrew).

Yeah, that reads like weasel words. So does 4.4.3 count as your one update? Does an unnumbered security patch to 4.4.2? The price point is tremendous though.
