Self-taught programmers get a bad rap because we've all seen the guy who didn't know about arrays and defined 300 variables (I'm not kidding by the way, and this was in perl. Full of wonderful names like $aa1, $aa2, etc.). However you can

I sense sarcasm, but 100 lines of xml in a 200,000 line web application is wonderful. And this xml is specifiying critical things like database connection and pool settings, transaction management, entity caching, and more. You are going

Curious enough in fact, to do some research. I found an interesting article: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1824790 I also forgot about file i/o, which I don't do much of in web applications.

I noticed a lot of criticism of Java's verbosity in the comments and I'm a bit curious what people are referring to? I work primarily in Java, but also do quite a bit of Javascript and Perl, and I don't notice Java being especially verbose

The best reason to use Java is the enormous ecosystem of libraries and resources. The best reason to AVOID using Java is the huge demand for Java programmers and the low supply. At my job we can barely find applicants with Java so we end u

You can ditch the xml almost entirely in spring 3, which I've been using for 2 years now. All you need is 50-100 boilerplate lines and the rest is annotations. I agree that 2.x was xml hell, but it is worlds better now.

I really like Mercurial, but even with it I've had some trouble getting the other developers I work with to really understand it. I could not imagine trying to show them Git. I think those who have mastered Git are blinding by how Smart a

That's a new policy, it was more when I did it. It was summer 2011 but I can't find an email reciept so I'm not completely sure. I believe it was between $2-$5 at the time. An expensive typo for sure.

I put my information in, and the max home I can afford is about 1/5th the price of my current mortgage. I know that my house is more than I can afford, but that is a pretty large discrepancy.

You are bringing up a valid point. Doug is saying that I should not use Backbone but instead create my own code structure and organization... but that's the thing. I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I want to use something proven. And

But sometimes completely unanticipated problems come up and you need stackoverflow... I'm not even sure how I did any work pre-internet. I know troubleshooting took me significantly longer back then, but I was also less experienced.
