You're right about that. I meant to say that even at larger organizations with big projects, python can succeed.

In the past, I would've said read The Little Schemer book for better understanding recursion and lambda (basically, a lambda function is an anonymous function - meaning you don't have to name it). JavaScript is actually a great language to

Even at that scale, python code readability trumps over almost every other language out there. Compulsory indentation and there's only one way to do this mentality keeps everyone on the same page. So, yeah, that's probably why Google uses p

And that feature alone makes for readability in large projects :-)

That and most new-python converts initially don't think in a very functional way. After the "aha" moment of lambda love, the Java ways can be unlearned.

+1. If anyone is interested in map-reduce solutions in python, be sure to check out Yelp's Mr. Job ( http://www.readwriteweb.com/cloud/2010/10/yelps-mrjob-poweri... )

Though I don't have direct experience with this particular one, I can tell you it's similarly implemented to Resque (the ruby async library). In my experience, Resque has been wicked fast thanks to Redis' excellent in-memory database. From

Looks a lot like GitHub's Resque(Ruby) https://github.com/defunkt/resque hopefully, this python variant will get all the good stuff that comes with Resque (like a Sinatra app to see your queues - very handy).

The best analogy I've used in explaining Git to my non-tech friends is that "it's like kind of like photoshop layers" It's definitely not complete but gets them to appreciate it.

Discovering map while writing in scheme was enlightening! It opened my eyes to functional programming and more than made the all nighter worth it.

Somewhat unrelated, but, while reading through this, I couldn't help but think "where else is facebook going to find engineers who have dealt with scale at a petabyte level?" Hmmm, the Google diaspora inside facebook looks more clearer now,

They are obviously swinging for the fences, especially with Sequoia involved. It's fair to expect that they would aim for a 9 figure exit. IPO or not. Interesting case about Cisco. I would've also thrown in Apple because of their huge war c
