I use Decibel Audio Player ( http://decibel.silent-blade.org/ ). All it does is play music, and it does that pretty well. If you're looking for a simple GUI audio player, I recommend it, although I'm not really sure how closely it follows t

I almost agree. Gmail has everything I want in email, but it's tied to Google. You can (and I do) use your own domains with Google, but you still have to go through them. Is that a problem for me right now? No, not really. Might it become

The biggest problem, I think, is that there's no vision. He says we need a better email client, but we don't know what he thinks better means. We don't even know what he doesn't like about existing clients. Even if this project does manag

Flash is much less efficient than other video formats on all platforms, not just OS X. My netbook (when it's running XP) can handle most 720p video well enough, but has trouble with flash videos that take up less than half of that area. It'

Access to a computer in a library is very often time limited and you're almost always limited in what you can do on the computer. It's good that people can use library computers, but it's absolutely not the same thing as having your own c

Most of today's kids, yes. Not all of them. Lots and lots of low-income families don't have access to these things, and it's naive to think otherwise.

I don't think I'd call Google's announcement either 'tight-lipped' or 'cautious'. It was unprecedented.

I feel Wave could be a useful tool, but I think the UI is killing it right now. It's ugly, poorly organized (and hard to understand), and wastes a lot of screen space. I've also found it too slow to be comfortable--even on fast computer run

I play trumpet and have since elementary school. Haven't had much time for it lately, though. Hopefully I'll get back into it after I graduate.

I'm not sure whether it's really made me a better programmer, but I find that doing something like taking a shower or getting something simple to eat can be a good way of getting around mental blocks that have formed when I'm working intens

I'd recommend an older Linux distro or Windows XP and using Chrome as your browser (rather than Firefox). My Eee boots in about 25 seconds (15 from hibernate) and feels quite fast.

To summarize: HFOSS is an organization that helps get students (and hopefully, soon, others) involved in FOSS projects that have humanitarian goals/benefit society in some way. If you're looking for major, well-established projects, we've w

A very similar thing happens to me when I'm doing visual design. I can work on something for hours and hours and love it. And then I come back an hour later and finally see all of the problems.

Indeed. Those are the font sizes I'd go with doing print typography. On the web I almost always use 14-16px for body type. It's much easier to read.

I put 31-50, but it's hard to keep track. There are very few times a day I say "I'll google this", but it's quite common for me to just enter a search term or incomplete url into the bar and Google ends up doing the work for me anyway.

Spying on your citizens and enforcing martial law are two very different things. The US already (illegally) spies on its citizens. Giving it more ways of doing so is not a good idea.

It's worth remembering that this is an issue even in the US, too! Until about a year ago my house in rural New York was stuck on dial-up. (We now thankfully have 10mbps DSL.)
