Quick anecdote... It defaulted to metric units globally when I first launched it ~8 months ago. But that quickly resulted in complaints from North American users, so it now defaults to imperial units in North America and metric everywhere e

Thanks! The avoidance of out-and-backs was a must-have for me. It can definitely be improved though. For example, right now the algorithm tries to avoid traversing the same path twice, but it will happily use a path that is only a few metre

Thanks! Cycling is on the to-do list. But I'm conscious it probably wouldn't just be a single category - there would need to be separation for road cycling and mountain biking. The routing algorithm does already prefer roads with

I actually have. Watch this space - there should be direct route syncing to Garmin and Suunto before terribly long. In the meantime, you can export routes to GPX/KML files already.

Independent of whether it's been down more frequently since the acquisition, I find Github's status page reporting to be lacking. It's also quite generous with definitions of outages and downtime. For example, on June 22nd th

I only posted this because I had some immediate insight into the nature of the issue - i.e. one of Github's two DNS providers seems to be having issues. Someone less familiar with DNS could learn a little by running the commands I put

I like the concept, and signed up to give it a try. I searched for "running route builder", and after about 15 minutes it just showed "Error". I'm keen to actually give it a try though if this can be corrected!

On point 2: socket programming hasn't caught up to the same level of performance as Flash had. Try sending or receiving gigabits per second with WebSockets. In my own tests last year on reasonably modern hardware with a 10Gbps Intel NI

Thanks very much for the kind words! I wasn't sure if others would find the technical details of this topic interesting (it's my first foray into GIS work), but it sounds like they would, so consider a blog post in the works.

Thanks! In rough order of priority: * Add sliders for setting greenery and hills preferences (so you can _prefer_ hills, rather than just avoid them) * Add support for preferring particular surfaces (e.g. tarmac vs trail) * Add support for

Thanks! There is an option in the settings menu to "Avoid hills", and in the not-too-distant future that will become a slider that allows you to prefer hills or avoid them. It's not open source yet, but I might open it up in

I'll publish the source on Github later today and will reply here. It's a very simple Java app, which scrapes and extracts page content using Jsoup.

Cost is the sole reason for us as well. We have ~600-700 dedicated servers around the globe, and generate a lot of egress traffic (~20PB/mo). We last ran the figures a year or so ago, and it'd cost us around 13-15x in network cost

Having been through a similar process with KPMG (that ended similarly), I can confirm that they operated on a retainer basis and it did need to be re-upped from time to time. The vast majority of their remuneration was a success fee though.
