I have a flat, foam roof, painted white. It really does work to keep the house cool, although the flat roof geometry would be problematic in climates with more precipitation. I suspect roof paint will be much less important in coming decad

Mark Rober had a nice video on this robot. To me, the coolest part was the 'refill station' they built to load dominoes into the robot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HEfIJlcFbs One critique on the design is th

A recruiter from a prominent SF / Silicon Valley tech headhunting firm once told me that 40 is the cutoff for individual contributors. As a counterpoint, I know plenty of over-40 (and older!) wise software engineers working for places

I'd argue that greenwashing is, indeed, misinformation. That is, it is misleading to categorize a company like Shell as an eco-friendly one. https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/transport-travel/what-greenw... I'

Um, no. Patriotism doesn't equal support for wasteful government programs, and criticism of one's government doesn't equal support for another country's government. Understanding that is part of the cultural 'high

If you're going to be spending billions of dollars, would you rather have a working ship afterwards, or not? Accountability DOES matter.

The criticism in the article seems misplaced to me - it falls victim to the sunk cost fallacy. These ships were problematic from the beginning. I remember them being commissioned without a working gun, alongside reports of ship-wide comput

In the US they are limited to 20mph, unless you get the 'speed' version, in which case they are limited to 28mph and technically forbidden from most bike trails. 20mph is a pretty decent clip for a (manual) bicyclist, but 28mph is

These things are still a bit far outside the mainstream, but if anyone hasn't tried an ebike yet, I highly encourage it! It really is magic mobility, with the free feeling of being on a bike, without the sweat or the necessary fitness

It doesn't really matter what language you use at the high level, as long as it is calling a highly-optimized, aggressively-compiled, native-instruction-set kernel for most of the work.

Reading the last names of the authors of these publications is refreshing, particularly in contrast to the often nationalistic comments that have peppered discussion of this rover. Maybe the future is brighter than we think!

Anecdotally, I've noticed an uptick in metal-framed house construction in my neck of the woods. So, yes, there are alternatives, even in the US. I doubt this results in lower homebuilding cost all-in, though.
