If you have a cabin or some natural spot you care about in the US, I highly recommend purchasing an actual USGS paper topo map. They are beautiful!

Lucky you; Taiwan is a great place to live! I would say that selling into US businesses is going to be a real drag, though. Those 11 AM PST meetings start at 3 AM in Taiwan...

In California, at least, yard waste and kitchen waste are diverted to composting facilities by law, and over half of biosolids (feces) are composted as well. I imagine (hope!) that the rest of the world will follow. And it's not only

We’ve road-tripped over much of the American West in our Tesla. The range issue is indeed FUD - it’s really not a big inconvenience to stop and charge while you’re eating, sleeping, or stretching your legs. We thought we’d take the gas car

The Houthis have cleverly tied their struggle to the Israel/Hamas conflict. So Egypt and Saudi Arabia have to worry about appearing pro-Israel if they intervene.

Pretty interesting to see the visceral and divided reactions in this comment thread. Some people are like, “that’s crazy” and others think, “I wish I had the time for that.” I feel this is precisely the divide that would be worth bridging i

Yes, you CAN begin to imagine what they're going to come up with!

It doesn't "use up" propane - it's a closed system that uses the propane as a heat transfer fluid. The hot water generated by the system is what will get piped around your house.

Qilou seem much more oriented around shelter from the rain than for shelter from the sun, though. I agree that they're a great addition to urban streets for pedestrians!

When it first came out, Chrome was much, much more performant than Firefox, and had better standards compliance than Safari. It was just a better browsing experience. V8 was a big deal performance-wise. Firefox has since largely caught-up

Nope, that knot is useful surprisingly often! It's the only applicable knot in that contrived single-handed-sailing-overboard situation, but it's also an effective knot when pitching a tent or tarp, or when hanging a clothesline,

You could try Vermicular. I don't think the rice is quite as good as Zojirushi, but it's an oven-safe ceramic coating and it even has a "scorched rice" setting.

Probably the biggest value for soup is that it never scorches due to the steam-as-heat-transfer mechanism. I don't have a steam function in my combi oven, but I imagine that would have similar value for gently reheating stuff. Those

If you end up buying one of these, I recommend against the more expensive version with a stainless-steel exterior - it has a low-quality heating element that repeatedly burnt out from regular usage. The 20-year-old green cooker still works

I've used "wet-bulb event" as a shorthand for the scenario where the wet-bulb temperature rises above human survivability. That's why I used "event" instead of "temperature."

I've recommended an emergency battery system for their house / air conditioner, a reserve stock of water in the house, a "go bag," and an escape plan to the mountains. Longer term, they are realizing that their primary

If you haven’t read it yet, the first section of Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson describes a wet-bulb event in striking detail. The horror of this climate-change catastrophe is what finally triggers a significant global cult

You're right; the risk of abduction is vanishingly small, even if many people are terrified of the power of the Chinese government. I'll replace "legitimate" with "common" in my comment.

by samcheng 3y ago
I doubt they would do that to an average schmuck like me, but the fact that it's a common consideration shows how far the Chinese government has fallen in the international public's perception. It's a shame, too. China has s

I doubt it's about COVID now. The government has really ruined China's "brand" internationally. 1. You need an onerous-to-obtain visa to visit. There is no visa exemption. 2. Banking is a total pain for a foreigner. M

There is definitely a much larger health issue for farm workers! One way to minimize your exposure to this kind of chemical is to buy organic produce.
