They are all like Microsoft Office where you have to pay for upgrades: one way or another you will, eventually, have to pay for an upgrade. Software is expensive to develop and eventually a constantly expanding market won't be enough t

What makes you think $15 entitles you to a lifetime purchase let alone $2.99? What else in your life do you get to keep forever for that amount? A pair of levi jeans: ~$50 of ~3 years; an iPhone ~$500 for ~3 years; a beer ~$5 for ~30 mins.

I do. It was a total game changer in every way. Partly, the 3D; mostly, the scale. If it wasn't for the discovery of the Mandelbrot set around the same time it would have been denounced as totally ridiculous. But, as Fractals were jus

In a comment on a thread about SVG libraries recently, here on HN, I opined that the world was long in need of a library that takes pre-made, artist created SVG and manipulates it: a jQuery for SVG. And here it is and I am very grateful. Th

@jcromartie Why did you delete your comment? I thought it was insightful. I don't live in a world where we worry about such things. Just knowing that you do is interesting.

Discussing some form of male oppression or domination is not the same as discussing men.

Like democracy, science is the worst way to discover truth… apart from all the others.

I hate to disappoint but women's studies classes don't spend their time discussing men. The clue is in the name.

@jcromartie — Put it this way: my ten year old would laugh at anyone who thought the universe was only a few thousand years old as would his 8-year-old brother.

This is an interesting problem: should you err on the side of creating new species every time you find a bone fragment or should you assume it is more of the same? I think I come down on the side of those who create new species until suffic

Of course, this is a British publication and so this wouldn't have occurred to the headline editor. It certainly didn't occur to me until you mentioned it. Most Brits would read that as disarray about the timeline of human evoluti
