You don't really need the insane taxes part, just an insistence that the plants are not allowed to emit halogens in the flue gas. The halogens are completely recoverable by bubbling them through an alkali mixture, doesn't matter w

Airbags are the most important safety feature in cars. They don't change the rate of acceleration: the car comes to a halt at the same speed, therefore, the person inside does as well. What they affect is jerk.

by samatman 2y ago
It isn't, though. It's the jerk. The difference between falling from a height and landing on a trampoline, and landing on concrete from the same height, is that the trampoline smoothly accelerates you to a halt once you collide wi

Nope, that's a misnomer, it's tail-call elimination. You can't call it an optimization if it's essential for proper functioning of the program. (they mean total compensation)

A better comparison for nuclear power is the airplane industry. No one goes into the bridge running plant every day and runs the bridge for a living, with several people assigned to run a daily checklist on said bridge. But it's still

It sounds like you're very angry about Magic the Gathering. You should take that up with the Wizards of the Coast. I've never seen the appeal myself.

This approach got a bad reputation by the late 1980s, thanks to some spectacular failures like the iAPX 432. The death of the Lisp Machine market wasn't spectacular in the same way, but they weren't a commercial success either, an

A better way to talk about this is something like: given a globe of Earth, say a 50cm diameter one, finished with plate Bristol paper, the texture of the surface would not be as smooth as a perfect model of Earth at that scale.

It's still a decentralized market, it's one with a single issuer, as many buyers as want cards, and as many sellers as wish to sell. Much like, for instance, Magic the Gathering. Not a lot of point in selling rare playing cards w

Because you have to pay to keep a traditional centralized database running, you have to trust the people running it, and when those people don't want to run it anymore, it's gone. With a blockchain, you pay to modify it, so moving

What all the "not fun" stuff you're referring to has in common, is extraneous complexity. We don't pick a framework so that we can spend hours trying to figure out why our model of what it does is different from what it
