Honestly, when it comes Avatars for my development needs, I just use Emojis. It’s just really easy to set up compared to getting anything more complicated.

Methinks it’s a good enough method to somehow get good enough candidates. Hiring is hard because it’s a negotiation: sellers always upsell their skills and buyers gotta figure it out. Negotiation is skill that not everyone has so at least b

Pretty much this. Companies needed software engineers, looked at what Google was doing, and copied. And they call themselves innovative for doing it.

I chose React because it really made life much easier when it came to reusing components and organising my projects. I find bare bones React the right level of complexity for me and I can get a lot done with it

I think the problem the author is referring to is it stopped being about Math and much more about impressing random strangers for the chance to gain an opportunity. My experience is similar to you - I too really enjoyed my time doing these

I absolutely love this feature so much. I work at a competitor of Monzo and this is definitely something I'll bring up with our Product team to see if we are thinking about this.

I’ve been using Soundcloud since I was 14 and still keep it up. It more or less has the same songs (with some exclusions here and there) and it has tons of mixes which are lovely. I love having lofi on as i code so i got a few 2 hour mixes

K&R C has to be my pick. I love it because it not only teaches you C and how to implement some of the standard functions but also there's enough pearls of wisdom in there to really help you improve as a programmer.

I really feel this: I wrote my own photo roll app PURELY because I wasn't able to find a decent photo roll app which just let me simply tag my images (all of them let me use create albums but sometimes, you want an image in two albums?

My hunch is that this club won’t work because it fundamentally is just another distraction from the goal here: which is to actually do something. Just do it. (Digression) “One of the realizations has been that I read too much, take too many

These people genuinely care about their craft to the point they ask: what happened. They then look into it. People who tend to care tend to talk about what they care about. So, you wind up getting a lot of blogs who sort of self select them
