tumblr is slow and erratic? first I've heard that one. secondly your 'distrust' of PHP makes no sense. Trust me, I hate php and would _never_ program in it myself, but that doesn't make wordpress any less of a good product. Hell facebook is

I don't really think there's any particular language out there that makes you 'better', although I would suggest learning a variety of different types of languages (i.e. functional vs. imperative, static vs. dynamic, etc.)

In terms of ease of use I would definitely go Rails, it pretty much has the largest ecosystem in terms of web development. In terms of more academically interesting languages, I might recommend Haskell or Clojure.

I don't really see why I'd take the time to learn a new language or library if it seemed dull to me.

Mobile development (in my experience) is generally a bit harder to get into that just standard web development. You could try something like PhoneGap or just plain web-friendly mobile development first to see if that works out well enough,

Just plain revert commits that aren't done correctly (i.e. directly on master / no accompanying unit tests). If he complains about wasting time just tell him to get his butt back to work :P. Other than that though it just sounds like you tw

I also read hacker news off the 'new' page. I find many interesting links that don't make it to the front page, and I don't find it very difficult to keep up with, but again I 'spose that depends on how often you're willing to keep up with

Internally we use github (haven't tried many others, honestly, just integrates well and gets the job done.) Publicly we use tenderapp. Always loved their design and UX flow.

+1 on the mentorship note. _Incredibly_ useful. Not only for yourself but can also be a great exercise for the teacher. http://pith.org/notes/2011/08/29/programmers-feeling-uninspi...
