People get offended by things whether you like it or not. It's extreme to make death threats, but it's also extreme and fairly despicable to go out of your way to offend an entire group of people simply because a subset of those people are

The thing about not constantly being able to send patches - I'll need to think about it again, but I thought I came up with a reason for why it didn't work in a general case. And I didn't just mean saving a copy of the document on the serve

How is your approach different from http://neil.fraser.name/writing/sync/ ? You said you aren't doing any diffs - so are you just creating a patch per user action (like typing the character "a" is actually represented as a patch for inse

For people interested in the approaches to real-time collab, I made a summary writeup of what I researched a while back - http://techblog.gomockingbird.com/using-real-time-collaborat... . Still hoping to actually dive into all the algori

I remember reading a comment a while back (I think on HN) about some running joke in one of his books about a cat (or maybe it was a dog?) and how _why had actually created this whole blog to keep the joke running outside of his book. It w

I assure you though, the beta release in this case is quite functional (and saves me a ton of time writing my web app).

And speaking of which - I just tried to opt out of their instant personalization "feature" for Yelp. I missed the blue banner initially, so now I'm trying to change things the very hard way. I get the message on top of yelp that says "Yel

I agree - I never post private data to Facebook. But now it doesn't matter if I post private data to Facebook or not. They can start hoarding data from my visits to yelp or pandora or whatever else in the future if I merely forgot to log

I feel like I JUST finished updating my privacy settings, only to have to do it again. I don't even use Facebook that much, and it's annoying to have to think about/waste time figuring out about my privacy settings when I don't really care

I've been using Beanstalk to handle the export queue for Mockingbird for the past few months now. It was super easy to setup and has been very stable. I'm a huge fan of these easy to setup/lightweight tools - people who design software fo

If anyone else is curious, the Wave protocol is also open source, as is Google Mobwrite (which uses differential synchronization instead of operational transformations (which is what Wave and I think Etherpad uses)). My "drawings" are repre

Thanks for the suggestion. Did using chat-based backends help much though? It seems like the hard part is in merging user actions when doing a collaborative drawing-like app (like Mockingbird). Chat servers, AFAIK, can just push messages

Sure it wouldn't be trivial to be made into a framework, but from what I understand, a framework for "collaboration" seems at least possible since I think this is one of Google Wave's goals.
