The response here seems overwhelmingly positive. And to some extent I get that. But it does make me nervous to see escalating tensions between major world powers. Especially when there were already tensions from the war in Syria.

A couple things: 1. Today there was an anti-NSA article ("NSA Assures Americans That PRISM 2.0 Will Be Way More Invasive"), which kind of invalidates my point. 2. "Comedic organization" was the best term I could come up

Another thing I noticed is that every Onion story related to the scandal has been pro-NSA (today I learned pro-NSA humor exists). It reminded me of the recent gun control debates in which every Onion story related to that was pro gun contro

1984 is a pretty incredible book, even without its relevance to current events. It is probably in my top three of all time.

Given that civil liberties were such a big part of his 2008 campaign, the best case scenario you describe is still a bit of a problem. I'm actually pretty angry at him right now. I donated a lot to his campaign in 2008 based on his foc

It sounds weird when you say it out loud: a huge part of our government operates in secret and without regard to the law. At this point I think everyone is just hoping that they are breaking the law for benevolent purposes (like fighting nu

To be fair, he does say "If ties were simply a clothing option, I would decline to use them but there would be no reason to make a fuss about it." His complaints are about the situations in which there is an expectation to wear a tie.

It should also be noted that startups aren't for everyone. After reading PG's essays in ~2005, I realized there was too much stress and anguish in that path for my personal tastes. It turns out the idea of creating value is also a useful ab
