In your opinion, is the same thing going to happen to Stitchfix? They are nearing unicorn status but they have warehouses and they own inventory.

This. I don't understand why some people think companies are entitled to get people for whatever wage they seem fit. If you can't afford it, tough luck. Let market forces decide what people are to be paid.

Agree to disagree I suppose. Engineers have the technical skills to look into basic financial and budgeting, and there are financial planning guys involved in big projects to do the really in depth stuff if required. A degree will not fix t

Hate to be blunt, but first of all, the things you pointed out are really common knowledge/common sense, and secondly, most of these are not necessary to be an engineering manager at all. 'No alpha' is something that even War

I think I just had a flashback to some meetings where my EM would spout this jargon endlessly. 30,000 ft view indeed. No wonder the basic stuff never got fixed, when you're head's in the stratosphere, even a tornado on the ground

You could say the same about a big legal case or a surgery. In both cases, lives can be on the line. Here it's just code. It became scary for me when I saw extremely poor leadership that disregarded everything from Andy Grove's hi

The MBA would probably be cheaper and definitely less of a commitment, especially an executive MBA. Te reverse this trend, engineers really need to look at management as an important function. I don't see lawyers and doctors doing MBAs

At a unicorn I was working at, MBAs were being hired to be engineering managers. I did not see a single engineer promoted to management, it was mostly all MBAs. The few I had direct contact were really useless at helping engineers out, all

Sam - In your experience, how much time does it take for founders to get rid of a co-founder who isn't performing up to par? Is it a decision by consensus? Or does the CEO take the call? How do they evaluate each other when everyone is

This was a frequently asked question, answered by Adora Cheung in a Q&A with all partners of YC. According to her, domain expertise is not something that should hold you back. You should, however, become an expert within 1-2 years. But

"This is closer to the real root cause. Today's startup culture (and the nature of the VC game) incentivises "faking it", delusional over-confidence, and pseudo-idealism that crashes into reality in an ugly fashion."

Exactly this. We have revenues and repeat users and yet, we got rejected everywhere. Some places want a "world domination vision", others (even supposedly great investors) are just blindly running after buzzwords ("Revenues?

Were there other companies that attempted what Stitchfix is doing? Trunkclub and Stitchfix were early movers in this space as far as I am aware and others have copied them. Didn't get your point regarding whole sellers. As far as I und

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but weren't some stats released a while back that said that 50% of the startups accepted by YC had been referred to them by the YC alumni network?

I always wonder about DSC. The blades are not theirs and there's nothing really groundbreaking in their tech. So why are they getting valued like a tech company?

I don't get this acquisition. They are in losses and there is no intellectual property to speak of. A somewhat funny video and a mailing list are now worth a billion dollars?
