Interesting. Have you got any more info on your custom libcairo setup and the settings you've used?

I'm working on a web-based MMO. We're about 75% through the game logic, artwork requirements is going out to the art studio in the next week. We should hit our beta milestone at the end of March.

http://goodbye-microsoft.com/ is your friend. It lets you install Debian from within Windows (and is different from wubi, as it does a proper install).

Take a look at the specs of the OLPC. It copes with pretty extreme conditions. Heat, moisture, accidental damage, lack of clean power. The screen is readable in African sunlight. I'd place a pretty decent wager you'd be hard pushed to find

I wonder how many of those apps can keep up the active membership over time? From the top 10, I can see only three or four that have long-term value and for those, you have to wonder how long it is before Facebook introduce their functional

I highly recommend http://www.pickydomains.com/ Cheap and it worked like a charm, some really great suggestions. (Admittedly, you're looking for a name but sometimes that and a domain are interdependent)

True. I've seen some interesting work on the latter case that produces upper and lower bounds for time to an acceptable solution but so far it seems to be limited in it's application to real world tasks. Missing the global max less of an i

Stagnation is the case where the best individuals in the populations fitness hasn't increased by some value for a certain period of time. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'a solution'? You know you've not arrived at an acceptable

Exactly. He's describing gradient descent (and possibly simulated annealing), not a genetic algorithm. Mutation, especially burst mutation with population stagnation, is what stops you getting stuck in local maxima.

Are you sure you're not getting GAs mixed up with gradient descent? The whole point of a GA is that they're a global search. Mutation and crossover (with certain conditions) generally mean you don't get stuck in local maxima. Of course, the

How exactly? If a query takes 1ms, you're going to pay for one sixty-thousanth of $0.14 . I fail to see what you're doing? Or am I missing something?

"SimpleDB costs 14 cents per machine hour, with no minimum fee." I guess we won't know the costs in reality until the service is up. It pretty much all depends on how efficient their implementation is.

That $0.14/hour is the amount of processing you do, not the hourly cost to use the service. $1226.4 is if you're hammering the data-base with intense queries 100% of the time (so it's always being utilised). In reality (though this depends

"You are never tied to a platform in these days, if you decide that you want to change platform then you hire the talent and change." Surely that's a cost though? Not necessarily a minor for one for a startup.

Everyone seems to be counting the initial cost in monetary terms. What's the overall cost of pinning your company's technology to a single supplier? With a FOSS-based solution (like LAMP/Ruby/etc..) you know you'll always have access to the

It worries me that when the XO will be able to run XP, we'll see the same stunts pulled with the XO as we saw with Classmate (see Mandrive and Nigeria).

The biggest issue (and the reason i'm not using it) is vendor lock-in. If the next version of Windows Server requires something crazy or has a massive price hike, you either accept it or have to port your entire system. With Java, I don't h
