Interestingly, this could really boost performance for languages on the JVM like Scala as they tend to create an awful lot of temporary objects.

I did the numbers a few months ago just out of curiosity. If you're buying TIPS (which returned 2% above CPI) and want 50 years of stipend out of your capital, you can get a 3.6% return above inflation. As in, $1m should get you $36k/year f

Hmmm, these prices aren't that competitive with dedicated servers. $479 will get you a dual-quad core dedicated with 16GB of ram these days. Even the lower end ones (2880MB) you can rent a 4GB SoftLayer box for the same price.

If you look at many of the Tory policies, they're very very much to the left of the Republicans and even many Democrats.

This is why the open source movement is so interesting, we're seeing competition and innovation in Operating Systems like never before. The cost of taking world-class components (like the kernel, filesystems, windowing systems) is so low th

"Flash runs much slower than native code, even slower than Java (which is interpreted byte code)." A little part of me just died. Java hasn't been wholly interpreted for an awfully awfully long time. It's amusing that people still have the

The pictures make it look a lot worse than it actually is. I have a G1 and the bend isn't noticable unless you lay it flat on the table and look at it in profile.

Wow, Nvidia's guy is really full of crap. "The world soundly rejected the first netbooks that came out with Linux," he said. "Printers didn't work, and devices didn't get recognized. The whole thing was a mess." So their master plan is to s

The article doesn't discuss the technical merits of each company's offerings, rather their approaches. .NET might be a very powerful and complete software platform that lots of people rely on.. but it's still a proprietry piece of technolog

A fairly well written post, i'm in full agreement. While Microsoft may have some great technology in their portfolio, I simply don't want to use much of it because of how little I can trust them. In Google's case, they're not really asking

The write-up didn't fill me with confidence but their website actually has a more technical take on things. It seems to be (atleast initially) a way of updating the Linux kernel without rebooting. http://www.ksplice.com/

I was a little concerned when I first got my G1 but after I settled down with my usage, I get about 3-4 days of usage off of a single charge. I've installed power manager, tweaked the brightness settings, turned off wifi and GPS though.
