How do users of languages like Pascal get by without any/many libraries? Do they need to use the FFI to call out to C functions constantly? I mean, I certainly buy that $VINTAGE_LANGUAGE could still be great to develop in, but I'm

(From memory, don't quote me on this), The BEAM bytecode is apparently not well documented, so the standard practice for compile-to-beam languages is to emit Erlang terms, then use the erlang toolchain to compile down to bytecode. I th

Thanks ;) The article certainly suffers from __that__ kind of long-winded (some call it long-form) writing.

Absolutely, (I moved over to Elixir from Clojure) and hence it seems like a strange blind-spot. When Rich talked about Systems programming and Runtimes, I expected Erlang/Elixir to come up as obvious examples along with Smalltalk and C

I think it's interesting that Rich seems to miss out on Erlang (and Elixir) entirely, even when he gets to talking about Situated Programs and Runtime Tangibility, not even to speak of Concurrency.

I'm not even so sure that it's Futurism with Thiel so much as just unbridled avarice. If it looks like a greedy scumbag, and quacks like a greedy scumbag, well...

Not sure I agree, I thought High Castle did a decent job of undermining notions of historical and moral determinism, in that it manages to get the audience rooting for Obergroupenfurher Smith by the end, blurring the moral lines a fair bit.
