For one, the candidate pool is artificially limited. And, like I said, 3 schools does not the market make.

If you want to one day start a startup, the huge paycheck you get from the big companies can definitely make that a lot easier.

I think it would be better for those candidates to make that decision themselves.

Who said anything about bias? Looking in places that you don't traditionally look isn't bias.

Well, for one, 3 schools do not the market make. For two, it means they're not making any effort to reach out to those in disadvantaged populations. It's a large problem that a lot of companies have.

Yeah, you kinda could. A lot of those things select for people with money.

"On the other hand, I bet if you sat down and ran the numbers, recruiting from state schools isn't productive." I would not buy that for a second.

It is when the "disagreement" is not only flat out wrong, but condescendingly so.

But in this case, we're not talking about business. We're talking about the funding to pave our roads, run our schools, be able to fight fires, and all that other good stuff we need.

"If you were to reduce the US corporate tax rate to 10%, a lot more profit would be booked in the US again." Which would do what, exactly, for most people? Precisely nothing. And they'd use loopholes to bring their tax burden

I don't think it's a lack of grit. I think a lot of it is a lack of motivation, or a lack of explanation of why they should continue.

I'm sorry, but we will never agree on this topic. Rape threats are not free speech, and saying I don't defend them does NOT mean that I am against free speech.

But again, in the absolutism of free speech, you're ignoring things like violent threats and racial slurs. And when you do that, you end up with something like 4Chan. Most people don't go there, for good reason. And what consequen

Again, no. I reject your absolutism. To say that someone is not a proponent of free speech because they don't believe those things are part of it is completely inane. We will never agree on this topic. In the example you give, I do not

I do. The person I was responding to is saying that you have to defend those if you wish to be a proponent of free speech. I reject that absolutism in it's entirety.

I feel being shocked at how this person was treated is not just "armchair quarterbacking". Given the power and trust we place in police, I don't feel it's unreasonable to expect they treat people with respect.

I mean, you can run your own instance, so I don't feel it's nearly that bad. And, if one instance becomes overrun with spammers, I think most would appreciate their instance's admin blocking the entire instance.

No. To say that I'm not a proponent of free speech because I don't support those things is completely inane. And for you to equate civil rights struggles with sending women rape threats is quite mind boggling.

So how would this work in practice? I'm s73ver_@foo. What happens if instance foo becomes unworkable, and I need to leave (it gets overrun by spam or something). I want to move to instance bar. But, there's already a s73ver_@bar.

I think it's because, if Twitter users can interact with Mastadon users, there's little incentive for them to leave Twitter. It's like when you could run Windows programs on OS/2. There was little incentive for developer
