Usually its done with standard hydropower not geothermal, lots of aluminum smelting in Quebec. China produces like 10x more than the next highest producing country.

More of a problem is when your water heater is within your conditioned space envelope and in the cold months when you are heating your space the hot water heater takes that heat. Its not a huge issue but you do run the heater extra for the

Virtual battery, there is an interesting project to do a similar thing with aluminum smelters where you heat them and operate at full capacity off-peak and then during peak electricity usage you run slower. Since a smelter consumes so much

That surprised me. Not exactly sure what other options there are, maybe impounding them somewhere but they would just accrue fees that couldn't be paid and probably be destroyed or auctioned (if anyone actually wanted them).

Was just my observation on the road in the Western USA. I think the stats you have include fleet and commercial which frequently buy the base models, I was just talking about non-commercial use.

You can buy graphene enhanced shoes [1], not really sure its much better than carbon black but it sounds cooler. I generally agree with you, from nanotubes to graphene no one can seem to really make it into anything. Cool physics though. [1

Salt water intrusion into the aquifer is pretty bad for agriculture. Not sure if that would be a problem with refilling oil reservoirs but I'm not an expert.

Non-jet engine aircrafts run on avgas, which isn't diesel like jetfuel, basically just high octane gasoline.

The vast majority of non-commercial truck use is not towing or hauling. Just look at the pickups you see on the road. Most are just luxury vehicles at this point. Not much difference than a slightly more practical sportscar.

Is Evanston really a college town? I was in grad school there and its so close to Chicago it just feels like a suburb. I've never lived in a true small college town. In Toronto my university experience was even less of a college town f

There is basically no community spread of measles currently due to good herd immunity (via widespread vaccination). When there are outbreaks it is usually very serious and stuff gets closed and people isolated.

The outer hard enamel layer of your teeth is acellular and cannot regenerate after it forms. Its been a while since I worked in this field (my PhD) but the inner dentin has some ability to regenerate due to the adjacent cells in the pulp. I

Cleanroom wipes are actually great. I use them all the time in lab, no lint, often woven and super durable, chemical resistant fibers. Totally overkill for some, although I have taken some home when we had odd sized samples we didn't n

Huge parts of the California desert are also classified as urban as the counties are so large, some of those places are extremely remote. Even the western central valley, other than i5 cutting through it is remote and sparsely inhabited.
