Yeah, the maps of Comanche were just run-length encoded and it took me an evening to reverse-engineer it. Nice to know, that I am not the only one who were able to extract them. But even without the pyramid it is very obvious, that these ma

When I saw the demo decades ago I was also totally amazed by it. And only 4k. I reverse engineered it with the Turbo Debugger under DOS. Found that most of the code was repetitive to prevent a slow loop construct. So it would have fitted ea

Well, the magic of this algorithm lies in the prerendered color map. Use the height maps and color maps from this engine and your result will also look much better.

I wonder, how they generated the landscapes. They are so small (1024x1024), but it takes a while to recognize the repetition. The game Comanche needed 4MB of RAM.

To boot Linux you formally need just the kernel image and a statically compiled busybox executable. This are only 2-3 MB. The boot process can be optimized as well for such a tiny system. You don't need long and complex boot scripts.

It uses a proxy. JSLinux emulates a network device and sends ethernet frames to a proxy via websockets. The proxy sends these frames to a Linux TAP device. The rest is a decent firewall configuration. You might even be able to connect to an

You don't have to rely on the source code of jslinux. There are a lot of other web emulators and most of them are open source. https://github.com/fcambus/jsemu

These are 2 independent developers. However the emulators have some technologies in common like the 9p virtio filesystem under Linux.

To quote Lord Acton here: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men,..." I guess this is one con argument for non-limited consecutive terms.

Consider these two simulators, if you want to try the examples in the paper: 1. https://www.research.ibm.com/ibm-q/ This is IBM Quantum experience. Click on "experiment" to start. It has a nice tutorial. 2.

A real benefit would be file system support for Reed-Solomon error correction. Some archival tools support such a feature. You would spent 1%-10% of the disk space for error correction.

It is similar, but the compiled code here is not fully architecture independent like for the Z-machine. Each word in Forth is compiled to a function pointer. So the Forth code vary for another architecture or when you recompile. But thanks
