They are like Vim. “Alt,letter, letter, arrow, letter, letter, arrow, enter”, etc. Rather than a single combination of keys, it is a series of key presses. I agree that it might be trivial to set up for spreadsheets, and it would be really useful

I use macOS most of the time, but switch to a Windows VM for Excel. Without the same keyboard shortcuts, the macOS version ends up having a fraction of the power available to experienced users of the Windows version. For people who use Exce

In practice the 4bit MLX version runs at 20t/s for general chat. Do you consider that too slow for practical use? What example tasks would you try?

It is a mixture of experts model so it will run on a computer with a lot of RAM and a GPU. Alternately, on an M3 Ultra Mac Studio with 256GB of unified memory, you can run a 4bit quant of GLM-4.6 at about 20 tokens/second. That compare

I think my link didn’t include the Javascript to choose the 512GB configuration, but it comes out to $8070, and their refurbished models are indistinguishable from new.

I think a surprising number of companies only survive because Microsoft Office gets around hostile internal IT departments and gives workers capabilities they can’t otherwise get on their locked down workstations. It was only in 2007 that t

That sounds like the blundering VP/president in The Diplomat . I wonder if it's instead North Sea Oil, and Iran preferring a UK with less energy independence.

I am suspicious of any claims about relative cleanliness. As with wooden vs plastic cutting boards, our intuitions are likely misleading. To be an effective fomite the currency has to not kill the microbe, and it has to readily give up the

Sadly, the complexity of the human immune system suggests that understanding the mechanisms and using data is superior to relying on heuristics alone. For example, the presence of rats or cockroaches are associated with their own grave impa

Fortunately the models are increasing in efficiency about as fast as they are increasing in performance, so your homelab surprisingly doesn’t become out of date as fast as you might expect. However, I expect there will also be very capable

In such a case, isn't the "3 year useful lifespan" almost entirely related to energy cost? Why not put machines on 24 hour schedules for their first couple years, then cheap intermittent power for the next five?

Local/open-weight models are already incredibly competent. Right now a Mac Studio with 256GB can be found for less than $5000, and an equivalent workstation will likely be 50% cheaper in a year. If anything that price is higher becau
