People who are afraid of or at risk of covid should be the ones staying home. Not healthy people.

Rent goes up every time the contract is renewed, mortgage payment stays the same for the whole 30 year loan.

> easy to develop for Right, that's the trade off. If we wrote low level software that can make efficient use of the hardware, I bet these cloud services would need significantly less hardware and thus significantly less power usage

Stop making inefficient electron and web apps that use up insane amounts of processing power for no reason. Get back to writing software like it was done in the 90s, where there wasn't a hundred layers of abstraction wasting computer r

It's more skeptisism where I see stories about elderly people dieing from old age, but because they tested positive for Covid it was counted as a covid death. Or died in a car accident, gun shot wound, fell off a ladder, etc. I've

These "Covid killed more people than BLANK" articles don't phase me, because we haven't separated the "died with covid" from the "did directly because of covid"

The real problem is that Google/Chrome basically run the internet. If Google decides to change some internet standard, Firefox and web developers all follow suite like lemmings. It's like Google has become the authoritative leader

The answer is in your comment. If you add a step of decompression, then text parsing...it's plain-as-day going to be a lot slower then just pushing bits through a binary parser. Less work = faster

Reading a binary file is no different than reading ascii. I experimented with writing a debugger, which meant learning how to parse executable ELF binaries. It really wasn't bad at all. It just takes a bit more time to figure out what

That’s also the sad part. It’s no longer about taking pride in one’s craftsmanship and caring about the end-users experience. It’s about cranking out janky products to make money.

It’s more sad than amazing. The amount of computing resources we waste for no real reaso. We have crazy fast technology that runs software just as slow as they did in the 2000s
